And the shock among teams of Mader&#8217;s death has not subsided at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-5\">How does cycling carry on?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">Part of the reason the cloud continues to hang over the sport is the fact few think there is a fix to stop potentially losing another rider in the same way &#8211; and the Tour de France, the sport&#8217;s biggest race by some distance, is no more immune to such a tragic event than a race like the Tour de Suisse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;What&#8217;s surprising is its intensity [at the Tour de France] &#8211; every day is full gas,&#8221; says Britain&#8217;s Tom Pidcock of Ineos Grenadiers &#8211; himself a very fast descender. &#8220;That surprised me a bit, actually.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">In the build-up to the race, Pidcock was among many who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cycling\/66038239\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.$link-2.0\">feel there is an acceptance the risks will always remain:<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.3\"> &#8220;Risks are involved in cycling. We do what we can to mitigate those risks. But they&#8217;ll never be gone,&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;Descending is something I love, but someone I race with died descending and it hit home quite hard.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">And even the sport&#8217;s governing body, the UCI, which released <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uci.org\/pressrelease\/stakeholders-of-professional-road-cycling-unite-to-launch-safer-an\/2dHAAn3TC3p5tfFHDWmz63\" class=\"story-body__external-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.0\">new safety guidelines<\/span><span class=\"gs-u-ml- gel-icon\" style=\"height:15px;width:15px;\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0\"><title data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0.0\">external-link<\/title><path d=\"M12 0v5h11.5l-5 5H0v22h22V17.5l-2 2V30H2V12h14.5l-7.8 7.7 3.6 3.6L27 8.5V20h5V0H12z\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0.1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.3\"> in collaboration with a number of independent bodies &#8211; which will look at the risks of race routes among many other things &#8211; on the eve of the first stage cannot eliminate the prospect of fatalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">The widely used motto adopted has been &#8216;We Ride For Gino&#8217;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Perhaps getting back on the bike is the only real way to deal with the grief. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-13\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0A69\/production\/_130256620_tordefrancerideratthestartofastage.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/0A69\/production\/_130256620_tordefrancerideratthestartofastage.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0A69\/production\/_130256620_tordefrancerideratthestartofastage.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/0A69\/production\/_130256620_tordefrancerideratthestartofastage.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/0A69\/production\/_130256620_tordefrancerideratthestartofastage.jpg 976w\" alt=\"Tor de France riders at the start of a stage\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-13.1\">The yellow jersey receives 500,000 euros prize money, with other jersey winners each receiving about 25,000 euros &#8211; after bonuses and podium places, the total prize pot is about 2.3m euros<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-14\">Who will win yellow?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">There are plenty of prizes up for grabs across three weeks, 21 stages and 3,405.6km of riding &#8211; the main one being the famous yellow jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">Two-time champion from 2020 and 2021 Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates is widely thought of as the favourite for yellow &#8211; strange in some ways, given the frighteningly talented Slovenian lost last year to Denmark&#8217;s Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo-Visma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Both are very strong in the key disciplines to win the general classification: climbing and time trials. The perceived difference for many is Pogacar is the more complete rider &#8211; and certainly more explosive &#8211; but Vingegaard has a more complete team around him, in the high-budget, highly talented Dutch squad. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">Last year&#8217;s race revealed as much when Pogacar was pincered on a climb during stage 11 by Vingegaard and then his own countryman Primoz Roglic &#8211; also on Vingegaard&#8217;s team &#8211; feeling the need to chase down attacks by both riders and eventually tiring himself out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">But after winning May&#8217;s Giro d&#8217;Italia, Roglic is not at this race, leaving Pogacar with really only one man to focus on. Could that be decisive? His injury at a race in Belgium in April aside, Pogacar has been peerless this year, hammering Vingegaard in March&#8217;s week-long Paris-Nice &#8211; a mini Tour de France.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-20\">How come Ineos don&#8217;t win these days?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">What could change the dynamic at the front of the race is the form of the man who won the Tour prior to the domination of Pogacar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">Egan Bernal, victor in 2019, is back for Ineos Grenadiers after a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cycling\/60175408\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.$link-2.0\">life-threatening crash last year<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.3\"> in which he collided with the back of a bus in his native Colombia during a training ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Following a period in intensive care and several operations and rehabilitation, the amiable 26-year-old returns to the Grand Tour stage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">After a few modest performances in warm-up races, Bernal says he just wants to get to Paris, and there are no more complex expectations from his team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure if I can get to Paris, to be honest,&#8221; he said in the team&#8217;s media conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;I need to take this day-by-day. I have not prepared for this race 100%. I have a free role in the team, and they will decide what to do depending on the feelings and the legs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m just thankful to be alive and to be here at the start.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">But if he can find the kind of form which saw him dominate the 2021 Giro d&#8217;Italia, everything could change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">And Ineos &#8211; the other top-budget team, alongside Jumbo-Visma &#8211; could also have other options. Pidcock won brilliantly and unexpectedly on one of the toughest and most iconic climbs in the race last year on stage 12&#8217;s Alpe d&#8217;Huez ascent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">He has made no secret of his desire to win the Tour. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">&#8220;My goal is to try and win stages and see where I can end up on the GC. I think that&#8217;s the idea: to stay as long as I can. But I want to win stages, that&#8217;s my biggest goal &#8211; and have fun doing it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-32\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-32.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-32.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/D971\/production\/_130256655_tompidcock.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/D971\/production\/_130256655_tompidcock.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/D971\/production\/_130256655_tompidcock.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/D971\/production\/_130256655_tompidcock.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/D971\/production\/_130256655_tompidcock.jpg 976w\" alt=\"Tom Pidcock\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-32.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$image-32.1\">Pidcock won brilliantly on Alpe d&#8217;Huez last year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-33\">Britwatch<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">And he is not alone as a Briton with big ambitions: Simon Yates is leading Australian team Jayco-AlUla. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">Yates, 30, looked relaxed and in a very good mood at the teams presentation, and is more decorated than twin brother Adam &#8211; who also features, but as super domestique supporting Pogacar in UAE-Team Emirates &#8211; winning the Vuelta a Espana in 2018 and 10 Grand Tour stages. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">But so far he has fallen short in the big race, and his team will be distracted by looking after their Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen on the eight flat stages. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">The only other realistic GC contender could be Australia&#8217;s Jai Hindley of Bora-Hansgrohe, who won last year&#8217;s Giro convincingly, but may lack the numbers in his team to deliver him through the highest mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">All contenders, however, will be happy to see fewer time-trial distances this year &#8211; with just one short stage dedicated to a discipline in which Pogacar reigns supreme. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-39\">Changing of the guard<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">There is so much more to the Tour than merely yellow, though. Mark Cavendish will attempt one last fiery tilt at greatness, as the 38-year-old sprinter contests his final Tour with eight flat-stage bunch-sprint attempts to win a record-breaking 35th Tour-stage victory for the unfancied Astana Qazaqstan team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41.0\">It is a record he shares with the all-time greatest: Belgium&#8217;s Eddy Merckx, but one he curiously does not seem overly motivated by &#8211; more so, the desire to win in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-42\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-42.0\">And after what has to have been the longest pause in the history of sporting event media conferences on Thursday, he simply said with shrugged shoulders: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know. I just try to win as much as I can. Sorry.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43.0\">Reflecting that records and experiences can be relived later, the Manxman said: &#8220;I still have to try and do a job and I know I&#8217;ll regret not living in the moment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44\"><span data-reactid=\".1ph737rjfqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44.0\">&#8220;The Tour de France gives me the most incredible emotions you can&#8217;t really analyse and appreciate until after. I know it&#8217;s my last one, but I still have the same job to do.
