This time Jabeur was comforted by the Princess of Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;She didn&#8217;t know if she wants to give me a hug or not,&#8221; Jabeur, 28, said. &#8220;I told her hugs are always welcome from me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">It felt like it was going to be Jabeur&#8217;s year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">She served her time in last year&#8217;s final when she took the first set before being beaten by Elena Rybakina. Throughout that run she had had the Venus Rosewater dish as the image on the lockscreen on her phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">This year, the lockscreen changed to her niece and nephew, the ghost of Rybakina was banished in the quarter-finals over three tight sets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Aryna Sabalenka, this year&#8217;s Australian Open winner, was beaten amid a wave of momentum in the semi-finals with Jabeur seemingly on course to become the first African or Arab woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$video-15\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$video-15.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$video-15.0.0\"><noscript data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$video-15.0.0.1\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--video\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$video-15.1\">Murray&#8217;s tears in defeat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">But instead, Jabeur&#8217;s old-school style &#8211; she smiles as she crafts points with spins and slice &#8211; was tied up in a straightjacket of nerves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Her grip was clenched, her shoulders tight and unseeded Czech Vondrousova won, inflicting Jabeur&#8217;s third Grand Slam final defeat in as many attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;I think this is the most painful loss of my career,&#8221; Jabeur said, who lost the US Open final two months after last year&#8217;s Wimbledon disappointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">As the words left her mouth, a crowd who had already embraced her held out its arms and pulled her in tight with a cheer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">Jabeur&#8217;s husband, usually her straight-faced fitness trainer, wiped away the tears in the players&#8217; box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a tough day for me today,&#8221; Jabeur said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">Jabeur sat disconsolate in her seat courtside as Vondrousova paraded the winner&#8217;s trophy in front of the flashing cameras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">Soon Jabeur disappeared for the solace of the locker room. There she cried with four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters, who suffered similar heartbreak on the biggest stage &#8211; losing four finals before winning her first major in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">Clijsters knows exactly how this feels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">Ninety minutes after the final point, Jabeur made her way to her news conference with her hood pulled up as she tried to hide her emotion from the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">As she crossed the players&#8217; balcony she was spotted by a group of Tunisian fans who proceeded to sing her name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">Jabeur paused, looked to the sky, and the tears flowed again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s painful because you feel so close to achieving something that you want, and actually back to square one,&#8221; she said, her eyes still red with emotion and a tissue never far away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t play good. So many things that I should have maybe done. Not serving well did not help. My backhand wasn&#8217;t here today.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">Clijsters will be an obvious example for Jabeur to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the toughest part about sport,&#8221; the Belgian told BBC Radio 5 Live. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">&#8220;Ons was the favourite today. She will question why she is overwhelmed with all these negative emotions when she gets to the big stages of a tournament.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">After the defeats for Murray, Federer and Novotna, the glory also followed for them on the Wimbledon grass. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">Murray went on to win the title a year after his 2012 tears, while Novotna lifted the trophy five years after her loss and Federer went on to win three more after the 2008 defeat by Rafael Nadal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.0\">&#8220;It is going to be a tough day today for me. [I am] not going to give up. I will come back stronger and win a Grand Slam one day,&#8221; Jabeur said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".1oqdww1n5we.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">&#8220;I want to thank my team for always believing in me.
