{"id":11723,"date":"2023-07-20T18:10:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T18:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/wimbledon-2023-kgothatso-montjane-asks-itf-to-address-tennis-representation\/"},"modified":"2023-07-20T18:10:08","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T18:10:08","slug":"wimbledon-2023-kgothatso-montjane-asks-itf-to-address-tennis-representation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/wimbledon-2023-kgothatso-montjane-asks-itf-to-address-tennis-representation\/","title":{"rendered":"Wimbledon 2023: Kgothatso Montjane asks ITF to address tennis representation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.69921875%;\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Kgothatso Montjane (right) and Yui Kamiji were runners-up in this year&#8217;s Wimbledon women&#8217;s wheelchair doubles, after winning the same title at the French Open last month<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">South Africa&#8217;s Kgothatso Montjane has called on the International Tennis Federation to address the issue of representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">Montjane and Japan&#8217;s Yui Kamiji lost the Wimbledon women&#8217;s wheelchair doubles final to the Netherlands&#8217; Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">Speaking to Newsday on the BBC World Service, Montjane felt that &#8220;maybe the ITF needs to push harder&#8221; on the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">She was the first black South African woman to compete at Wimbledon in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">Montjane and Kamiji partnered for the first time this year at Roland Garros, winning the French Open women&#8217;s wheelchair doubles title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s the issue of money; is it because we are poor? I don&#8217;t know. I&#8217;m looking for the answers, I want to know why,&#8221; Montjane said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m being told you&#8217;re the first one so it&#8217;s a bittersweet moment for me [winning the French Open].<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;I want to celebrate, but at the same time I started late and I might be retiring soon. Who&#8217;s next from Africa to do it?&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">Montjane became the first South African woman to win a French Open title since Tanya Harford and Rosalyn Fairbank won the women&#8217;s doubles in 1981, but believes there is enough talent on the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">&#8220;I really wish some fellow Africans can get an opportunity because I believe there&#8217;s talent out there,&#8221; said Montjane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">&#8220;I feel like I&#8217;m a beacon of hope somehow, because I&#8217;m doing it in a wheelchair. And when you look around, no-one is really doing it, apart from the lady from Tunisia [Ons Jabeur]. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">&#8220;As a black person, I&#8217;m just hoping people can see [what I&#8217;m doing] and invest more in black kids, so that we can see many more of us [doing it too]&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-14\">Funding issues despite ITF pathways<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Andrew Moss, head of the ITF World Tour, told the BBC&#8217;s Newsday that the matter is being addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;There is talent on the continent that can break through into the top of the game; the elite game can come from anywhere,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">&#8220;And so the ITF has invested a lot of money both in development pathways, and also to help put on professional tournaments to help that happen.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">Aside from the obvious motivation of winning another Grand Slam title, Montjane hopes her performances can inspire wheelchair tennis players, particularly black women back home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">Moss says that keeping people open to the idea of playing the sport beyond junior level is the key to success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a significant growth of tournaments across Africa. So that&#8217;s kind of the main building block. What&#8217;s then important is that there are opportunities for players after they stop being juniors, once they become 18, 19 years old,&#8221; he said.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;I think if we have that pathway in place, then talent will naturally come out and then we can start working on where we can make it more affordable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;But the more countries that host tournaments in Africa, obviously the better, which means that we can make sure that talent can come from anywhere.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Despite such positive words from Moss, Montjane remains adamant things must change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;At the moment, funding is an issue but we do have a good base foundation when coming to wheelchair tennis. We used to host six ITF tournaments back in the days before we lost funding,&#8221; she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;There&#8217;s so much talent out there, just now people are staying at home because they can&#8217;t travel due to the funding issue.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">After success on the Roland Garros clay last month, Montjane wants Tennis South Africa to play their part too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;This is just the moment for them to go knocking on doors to restore the sport,&#8221; she said.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".2fvqfykms7c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">&#8220;This is the opportunity because we do have so much talent, so I hope they use this moment to go and knock on those corporate doors and look for more funding.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/66234166?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=KARANGA\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kgothatso Montjane (right) and Yui Kamiji were runners-up in this year&#8217;s Wimbledon women&#8217;s wheelchair doubles, after winning the same title at the French Open last month South Africa&#8217;s Kgothatso Montjane has called on the International Tennis Federation to address the issue of representation.
