{"id":12062,"date":"2023-07-29T20:57:22","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T20:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/belgian-grand-prix-leading-drivers-critical-of-pointless-extreme-wet-tyres\/"},"modified":"2023-07-29T20:57:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T20:57:24","slug":"belgian-grand-prix-leading-drivers-critical-of-pointless-extreme-wet-tyres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/belgian-grand-prix-leading-drivers-critical-of-pointless-extreme-wet-tyres\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgian Grand Prix: Leading drivers critical of &#8216;pointless&#8217; extreme wet tyres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Follow live text and radio commentary of the Belgian Grand Prix on the BBC Sport website and app from 12:45 BST on Sunday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">Drivers say the poor quality of Formula 1&#8217;s &#8216;extreme&#8217; wet tyre is adding complications when starting races in bad visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">They also backed the race officials&#8217; call to delay the start of the Belgian Grand Prix sprint because of spray.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">But Max Verstappen, George Russell and Charles Leclerc all called for improvements to Pirelli&#8217;s extreme wet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Mercedes driver Russell said the tyre was &#8220;pretty pointless&#8221; and &#8220;needs to be substantially improved&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">All drivers agreed that poor visibility was the main concern when starting races in the wet but added that tyres were also a factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">F1 rules mandate that drivers have to start on the extreme tyre when a race is started behind the safety car, as was the case at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday because of a heavy downpour that delayed the start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">The field did five laps behind the safety car in an attempt to clear some of the water on the track and improve visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">But when the race was finally started, 10 cars stopped to fit the more lightly treaded intermediate tyres before they had even crossed the start line, and the other 10 stopped at the end of the first lap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers&#8217; Association, said: &#8220;The extreme tyre is really, really bad. It is six, seven seconds slower than the intermediate and the only reason you would ever run it is if you aquaplane on the intermediate. So that needs to be substantially improved.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Russell compared F1&#8217;s current predicament with that in 2007, when the sport was using Bridgestone tyres &#8211; the Japanese company is competing with incumbent Pirelli for the next tyre contract period, which starts in 2025 &#8211; as well as other makes in the junior categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;I remember watching the old onboard videos of 2007 with [Felipe] Massa and [Robert] Kubica in Fuji,&#8221; Russell said.  &#8220;So much water and still pushing flat out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">&#8220;I remember doing test days here in F3 on Michelin and Hankook and aquaplaning wasn&#8217;t really as thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">&#8220;I appreciate we are doing over 200mph and it&#8217;s not straightforward, but there needs to be some significant improvements.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Ferrari driver Leclerc added: &#8220;There&#8217;s some work that needs to be done there because we&#8217;ve got extreme tyres that are really slow but are really good for aquaplaning but we never drive in those conditions because of visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;So whenever it&#8217;s driveable, we need to go on inters, it&#8217;s quite tricky at the moment. So if we really want good visibility we can&#8217;t do a race in the wet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;It has become worse since when I started in F1. It is the wider tyres and the ground effect cars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;But in the junior categories, it was also quite tough, the visibility was very bad. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;We had these accidents happen over the years. That is always the unfortunate things, something bad needs to happen before it really gets looked at, but I remember races in F3 when I couldn&#8217;t see anything when you ate in the pack.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">Verstappen was referring to two fatalities at Spa in the last four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">The most recent of these, involving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/motorsport\/66076074\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2.0\">18-year-old Dutch driver Dylan van &#8216;t Hoft,<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.3\"> was also in wet conditions with poor visibility &#8211; he was T-boned by another car after coming to rest following a crash on the straight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">Alpine&#8217;s Pierre Gasly, who finished third in Saturday&#8217;s sprint, was a close friend of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/motorsport\/49537761\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.$link-2.0\">Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.3\"> who was killed in a T-bone accident in the dry at Spa in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">The Frenchman said: &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t see a thing. If Oscar [Piastri] and Max were in the middle of the straight, I would be straight into the side of them. I couldn&#8217;t even see 10-20 metres ahead of me. You are just hoping for the best. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t feel safe when they restarted. I was really hoping no guy gets off the track or collides and gets stuck in the straight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;It is not really a question of conditions, because the conditions were raceable from the first lap, but the problem is the spray is so huge out of these cars and the water just stays in the air. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">&#8220;I was in sixth and I can only imagine how bad it was at the back of the pack. I wanted to box [pit] anyway for inters, but this just added another incentive to box, to just get some visibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">&#8220;You wanna race but at the same time, I&#8217;m glad every thing went safely today but all you need is one guy to be stopped in the straight and it can go wrong very quickly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">Verstappen said he agreed with the decision of officials to do the extra laps behind the safety car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">He said: &#8220;It was quite a safe view on things but I prefer that than risking it and going too early.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">Russell said: &#8220;The FIA did a good job under the circumstances &#8211; still incredibly dangerous conditions, doing 300km\/h on the straight and can&#8217;t see 50 metres in front of you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">&#8220;It is particularly bad at this circuit. I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s the humidity or the trees but the spray just doesn&#8217;t seem to disperse. It&#8217;s like you&#8217;re driving into a cloud, it really is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".jgegr8sp8u.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">&#8220;But I felt like those four laps under the safety car didn&#8217;t really give us a lot.
