into popular lexicon.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Ten years later, football had its own Sliding Doors moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">In the summer of 2008, Barcelona &#8211; A 4-1 thrashing followed, with the Madrid fans chanting &#8220;Laporta please stay!&#8221; to Barca&#8217;s under-pressure president Joan Laporta. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Off the pitch, dressing-room ringleader Ronaldinho was spending <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/europe\/7356366.stm\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.0\">more time in the city&#8217;s nightclubs than banging in goals.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Team discipline seemed to have drained away, with stories of the Brazilian being left to get his head down and sleep off the night&#8217;s excesses rather than knuckle down in training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Questions over Ronaldinho&#8217;s weight gain, and penchant for a night out, peppered the front and back pages of Barcelona&#8217;s newspapers while in press conferences, every question directed at Rijkaard included the word &#8220;resign&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">With the Madrid fans&#8217; catcalls still ringing in his ears, Laporta provided his own answer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Less than 24 hours after the embarrassment in Madrid, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/europe\/7391126.stm\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.$link-2.0\">Rijkaard was sacked. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">Who would replace him? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Top of the billing, and top of the list for any football pragmatist, was Jose Mourinho. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">Mourinho had a positive historical relationship with the club as assistant to previous managers Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">He also had a CV surpassing anyone else in Europe at the time, following Uefa Cup and Champions League triumphs with Porto, and successive and unprecedented Premier League titles with Chelsea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">But, rather than opt for the A-list football celebrity, Barcelona opted for someone from the B-list. Literally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">They chose their own B team manager, who was entirely unproven at the top level, and had spent the previous campaign &#8211; his first as a boss &#8211; in Spain&#8217;s fourth tier and a Catalan regional division. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">The decision? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Guardiola over Mourinho. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">To understand why, and to get to the bottom of that decision that changed football, you have to dig deep into Barcelona DNA&#8217;s where poetry, not pragmatism, is the primary motivator and one man&#8217;s methods, opinions and gut instinct trump everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$image-25\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$image-25.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$image-25.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13D77\/production\/_132417218_pepandjohan_rex.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/13D77\/production\/_132417218_pepandjohan_rex.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13D77\/production\/_132417218_pepandjohan_rex.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/13D77\/production\/_132417218_pepandjohan_rex.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/13D77\/production\/_132417218_pepandjohan_rex.jpg 976w\" alt=\"Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola during a Barcelona training session in Guardiola's playing career\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$image-25.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$image-25.1\">Cruyff shared a close relationship with Guardiola, who made his Barcelona first-team breakthrough under the Dutchman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">As the new BBC Sport documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m001vnm5\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2.0\">Pep Guardiola: Chasing Perfection<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.3\"> explores, to understand Pep, you have to understand Johan Cruyff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">Cruyff is synonymous with Barcelona, winning La Liga in 1974 and the Copa del Rey in 1978 as a player, before lifting four consecutive Spanish top-flight titles, and the European Cup, as the club&#8217;s manager between 1988 and 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">And Cruyff wielded an incredible influence over Guardiola&#8217;s career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">It was Cruyff who plucked a 19-year-old Guardiola from the Barcelona reserves in 1990 and catapulted him into an all-conquering first team full of global stars such as Michael Laudrup to Ronald Koeman. Cruyff saw in the teenage Guardiola a quality that endures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">Spanish journalist Lu Martin knows Guardiola better than most, having ghost-written his little-known 2001 book La Meva Gent, El Meu Futbol (My People, My Football in Catalan).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">&#8220;In Catalonia, we say &#8216;seny&#8217; and &#8216;rauxa&#8217;. [Legendary Barcelona captain Carles] Puyol has &#8216;rauxa&#8217; &#8211; impulse, drive,&#8221; Martin says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">&#8220;The &#8216;seny&#8217; &#8211; the brains &#8211; at FC Barcelona was Pep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">&#8220;Pep brought sense to the team &#8211; because Pep could understand everything Johan wanted from him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">&#8220;Johan had two sons. In the previous season, they had been relegated after failing to win their final 10 matches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47.0\">Guardiola&#8217;s first match in charge was a pre-season friendly played on a tiny, artificial pitch against Banyoles. Small pitches and, when matches were played on grass, bobbly surfaces were a theme in a tricky start to managerial life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48.0\">Barcelona B won one of their first three matches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49.0\">After a 2-0 defeat by lowly Manresa, who were eventually relegated, Guardiola endured his first test of faith. Could his playing style &#8211; prioritising possession over position on the pitch &#8211; thrive in the testing conditions of the fourth tier?  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-50\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-50.0\">By the time he arrived at training on the Wednesday after that defeat, he had made his mind up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-51\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-51.0\">&#8220;I had thought we have to change because the pitches are so small,&#8221; he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-52\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-52.0\">&#8220;I doubted for two days. But, in that moment, I decided &#8211; if we could win and play quite good football on a small pitch, I could do it at a higher level with better players and better pitches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-53\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-53.0\">&#8220;I arrived at training and said: &#8216;This is what I believe.&#8217; The alternatives, the ways we looked at changing, they did not convince me. That is why I could not change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-54\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-54.0\">&#8220;It was an important moment because I was new, I was not experienced. Aged 37, never trained big players. I had to prove myself.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-55\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-55.0\">One man he didn&#8217;t need to prove himself to was Domenec Torrent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-56\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-56.0\">Torrent had been managing fellow fourth-tier outfit Girona. When Guardiola, a man he had revered as a player came knocking, Torrent jumped at the chance to join him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-57\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-57.0\">Torrent spent 11 years at Guardiola&#8217;s side as his assistant before leaving Manchester City for a head coach role with New York City FC in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-58\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-58.0\">&#8220;I always say Pep has great powers of seduction,&#8221; he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-59\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-59.0\">&#8220;He&#8217;s someone who can convince players with his everyday work with them. He&#8217;s a sponge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-60\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-60.0\">&#8220;He learns very quickly about everything and everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-61\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-61.0\">&#8220;He turned Barcelona B into a very compact side who played very good football. And he put across to the players his ideas, which were totally different from anything they&#8217;d heard up until then. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-62\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-62.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s true that we built a very good squad.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-63\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-63.0\">Sergio Busquets, Pedro and Thiago Alcantara were rookie faces in that squad and Guardiola was the uncompromising, relentless, ruthless driving force at the centre of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-64\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-64.0\">Professionalism was to the fore. Opposition sides were scouted and video-analysed, a level of detail unheard of in that division at the time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-65\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-65.0\">An 11pm curfew was introduced &#8211; as were fines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-66\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-66.0\">&#8220;Pep had very clear boundaries, he did not let anybody do anything that he thought was out of place,&#8221; Pep&#8217;s then-captain Marc Valiente has said. &#8220;He had a very clear code. You had to adhere to that in terms of the rules, in terms of fines, and I think that was fair.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-67\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-67.0\">Barcelona&#8217;s then-sporting director Txiki Begiristain &#8211; now in the same job at Manchester City &#8211; also remembers Guardiola&#8217;s pursuit of perfection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-68\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-68.0\">&#8220;It was unbelievable,&#8221; Begiristain says. &#8220;In England, the level would be like League Two.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-69\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-69.0\">&#8220;Pep was working in League Two like he was in [charge of] the [Barcelona] first team: Looking after the players, food, chefs, travelling, recording the games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-70\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-70.0\">&#8220;He was really amazing. He was thinking &#8216;one day I&#8217;m gonna be a first-team coach, I wanna work like this&#8217;.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-71\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-71.0\">&#8220;And so, he was already doing it in the fourth tier. It was crazy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-72\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-72.0\">After their inauspicious start, Guardiola&#8217;s Barcelona B&#8217;s form dramatically improved en route to winning promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-73\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-73.0\">Guardiola&#8217;s work-rate won hearts in the boardroom, most notably with the most influential Barcelona face of all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-74\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-74.0\">&#8220;I remember that Johan Cruyff visited a lot with his wife to see the Barca B games,&#8221; Torrent says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-75\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-75.0\">&#8220;And, strangely, I saw that instead of watching the game, he was watching Pep, how he managed, how he behaved, how he moved: his body language. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-76\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-76.0\">&#8220;And I remember mentioning to Pep: &#8216;That&#8217;s the second time Johan&#8217;s been to see you and he was just watching you.&#8217; All that made sense when Pep took over the first team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-77\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-77.0\">&#8220;I remembered those afternoons when Johan came to see him, not the football.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-78\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-78.0\">Promotion cost Guardiola a fair bit of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-79\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-79.0\">At the beginning of the campaign, he had promised to buy the team lunch oif they won three games in a row. I&#8217;m pretty sure some of some of the first-team players didn&#8217;t take it as seriously as we should have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-86\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-86.0\">&#8220;But I still remember that I thought: &#8216;Wow, how are they playing? Why is there always a spare man?&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-87\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-87.0\">&#8220;It was very difficult to pressure them.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-88\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-88.0\">For the first team, the match was an embarrassment. Ronaldinho was withdrawn after just 10 minutes. Deco also reportedly struggled in the face of the relentless reserves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-89\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-89.0\">Pep&#8217;s pressure was to prove too much for the Barcelona board as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-90\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-90.0\">A combination of the B team&#8217;s promotion, the friendly farce and Rijkaard&#8217;s reticence to discipline his wayward squad forced a change at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-91\"><span data-reactid=\".1gnwjd07ymg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-91.0\">The choice was clear. Europe&#8217;s top dog, the all-conquering disciplinarian Jose Mourinho?
