Joaquin Niemann beat Sergio Garcia on a dramatic fourth play-off hole that took place in near darkness to win the LIV Golf Mayakoba title in Mexico.<\/b><\/p>\n
The Chilean had the chance to win in regulation but missed a birdie putt at the 18th to send it to a play-off.<\/p>\n
Both players hit par on the par-four 18th three times, before Niemann birdied at the fourth attempt.<\/p>\n
“On the practice grounds I saw myself making that last putt to win, so it’s freaking awesome,” Niemann said.<\/p>\n
The players had been offered the chance to play the fourth play-off hole on Monday, but both agreed to continue despite the rapidly fading light.<\/p>\n
“At the first play-off hole I didn’t think it was going to get too dark,” Niemann added.<\/p>\n
“I thought it was going to take a little bit [longer]. You never know what’s going to happen, but I was expecting to go as fast as I could.<\/p>\n
“I just told myself to give myself a chance and ended up hitting a good shot and making that putt, which was awesome.”<\/p>\n
Spain’s Jon Rahm narrowly missed out on making it a three-way play-off on his LIV Golf debut after a bogey-bogey finish meant he finished third on 10 under, two shots behind Niemann and compatriot Garcia.<\/p>\n
Another LIV debutant, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, finished tied for eighth on seven under.<\/p>\n
The newly formed team Legion XIII, comprising Hatton, Rahm, Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent and American Caleb Surratt, took the team title on 24 under for the week – four shots ahead of Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
