Portsmouth and Stockport both clinched EFL divisional titles on 16 April<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

BBC Sport outlines the promotion and relegation issues – and the race for European qualification – in England and Scotland for 2023-24.<\/span><\/p>\n

Premier League<\/h3>\n
\n

The title is between Manchester City and Arsenal, and will be decided on the final day of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The top four teams qualify for the Champions League group stage – <\/span>Manchester City<\/strong>, <\/span>Arsenal, Liverpool<\/strong> and <\/span>Aston Villa.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fifth-placed Premier League team will qualify for the Europa League group stage, along with the FA Cup winners. If Manchester City win the FA Cup, that Europa place reverts to the league.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Europa Conference League place earned by Liverpool for <\/span>winning the Carabao Cup<\/span><\/a> will revert to the league. Tottenham cannot finish lower than sixth, so will qualify for the Conference League at worst.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom three teams will be relegated to the Championship. <\/span>Sheffield United<\/strong>‘s relegation was confirmed on 27 April as they <\/span>lost 5-1 at Newcastle.<\/span><\/a> Burnley<\/strong> joined them on 11 April after <\/span>losing 2-1 at Tottenham,<\/span><\/a> while Luton will be the third relegated club unless they win their final game and Nottingham Forest lose, and the Hatters make up a 12-goal swing in goal difference on Forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women’s Super League<\/h3>\n

The WSL champions and runners-up will enter the Champions League second round, with the third-placed team entering at the first round. <\/span>Chelsea, Manchester City<\/strong> and <\/span>Arsenal <\/strong>have made sure of the Champions League spots, but the title – which is between Chelsea and City – will be decided on the final day of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bristol City<\/strong> have been relegated and will make an immediate return to the Championship, after they were <\/span>thumped 4-0 by league leaders Man City<\/span><\/a> on 29 April. They will be replaced by Championship winners <\/span>Crystal Palace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Championship<\/h3>\n
\"Leicester<\/span><\/span>
Leicester City are the first team to have won English football’s second tier on eight separate occasions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Leicester City<\/strong> clinched an immediate return to the Premier League on 26 April after promotion rivals <\/span>Leeds lost 4-0 at QPR,<\/span><\/a> and made sure of the title by <\/span>winning 3-0 at Preston<\/span><\/a> three days later. <\/span>Ipswich Town<\/strong> earned the second automatic place by <\/span>beating Huddersfield 2-0<\/span><\/a> on the final day of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the play-off final on Sunday 26 May, <\/span>Leeds United<\/strong> face <\/span>Southampton<\/strong> for the final promotion place.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom three teams are relegated to League One. <\/span>Rotherham United<\/strong> were the first EFL team to be relegated when they <\/span>lost 1-0 to Plymouth<\/span><\/a> on 5 April, and they were be joined on the final day of the season by <\/span>Huddersfield Town<\/strong> who <\/span>lost 2-0 at Ipswich<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Birmingham City<\/strong>, despite their <\/span>1-0 win over Norwich.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

League One<\/h3>\n

Portsmouth clinched promotion – and the title – at Fratton Park with two games to spare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Portsmouth<\/strong> secured automatic promotion to the Championship as champions on 16 April by <\/span>beating Barnsley 3-2,<\/span><\/a> and were joined by runners-up <\/span>Derby County<\/strong> who <\/span>overcame Carlisle 2-0<\/span><\/a> on the final day of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bolton Wanderers<\/strong> face <\/span>Oxford United<\/strong> in the play-off final on Saturday 18 May for the final promotion place.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom four teams are relegated to League Two. <\/span>Carlisle United<\/strong> were relegated on 6 April after <\/span>losing 2-0 at Northampton.<\/span><\/a> Port Vale<\/strong> joined them after <\/span>a 2-0 loss at Bolton<\/span><\/a> on 20 April, the same day that <\/span>Fleetwood Town<\/strong> went down despite <\/span>beating Leyton Orient 1-0.<\/span><\/a> The fourth relegated team was <\/span>Cheltenham Town,<\/strong> who <\/span>lost 2-1 at Stevenage<\/span><\/a> on the final day.<\/span><\/p>\n

League Two<\/h3>\n
\"Stockport<\/span><\/span>
Stockport celebrated their title win with a flag remembering George Thompson, a teenage Hatters fan who died in 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Stockport County<\/strong> clinched automatic promotion to League One by <\/span>beating Morecambe 2-0<\/span><\/a> on 13 April, and won the title three days later with <\/span>a 5-2 win at Notts County.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

They will be joined by <\/span>Wrexham,<\/strong> who made sure of promotion by <\/span>beating Forest Green 6-0<\/span><\/a> on 13 April, and <\/span>Mansfield Town<\/strong> who <\/span>beat Accrington 2-1<\/span><\/a> on 16 April.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crewe Alexandra<\/strong> face <\/span>Crawley Town<\/strong> in the play-off final on Sunday 19 May for the final promotion spot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Forest Green Rovers’<\/strong> relegation to the National League was confirmed on 16 April after <\/span>Colchester beat Grimsby 2-0,<\/span><\/a> and they were joined on the final day of the season by <\/span>Sutton United<\/strong> who <\/span>drew 4-4 at Milton Keynes.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

National League<\/h3>\n
\"Chesterfield<\/span><\/span>
Chesterfield were the first team in England or Scotland’s major leagues to clinch promotion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chesterfield<\/strong> secured the title, and automatic promotion back to the EFL after six years away, by <\/span>beating Boreham Wood 3-0<\/span><\/a> on 23 March, while <\/span>Bromley<\/strong> will play in League Two for the first time in their history after <\/span>beating Solihull Moors on penalties<\/span><\/a> in the play-off ifnal on 5 May.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom four teams are relegated to National League North or South, and will be replaced with the champions and play-off winners of those two divisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oxford City<\/strong>‘s relegation was confirmed when they <\/span>lost 2-1 at AFC Fylde<\/span><\/a> on 23 March, and they were joined on 13 April by <\/span>Dorking Wanderers<\/strong> who <\/span>drew 1-1 at Rochdale,<\/span><\/a> Kidderminster Harriers<\/strong> who <\/span>lost 1-0 to Eastleigh,<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Boreham Wood<\/strong> who <\/span>drew 0-0 with Ebbsfleet<\/span><\/a> on the final day of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tamworth<\/strong> clinched the National League North title on 6 April with a <\/span>1-1 draw against Warrington,<\/span><\/a> while <\/span>Boston United<\/strong> won the play-off final <\/span>2-1 against Brackley Town<\/span><\/a> on 4 May.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeovil Town<\/strong> made sure of the National League South title by <\/span>beating Truro 2-0 on 11 April,<\/span><\/a> while <\/span>Braintree Town <\/strong>beat Worthing 4-3<\/span><\/a> in the play-off final on 6 May.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scottish Premiership<\/h3>\n
\"Celtic<\/span><\/span>
Celtic clinched their 12th Scottish title in 13 seasons with a game to spare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Champions <\/span>Celtic<\/strong> made sure of the title on 15 May by <\/span>winning 5-0 at Kilmarnock,<\/span><\/a> They will enter the Champions League group stage, with runners-up <\/span>Rangers<\/strong> entering in the third qualifying round.<\/span><\/p>\n

With those two clubs also contesting the Scottish Cup final, the Europa League place reserved for the Cup winners reverts to the league.<\/span><\/p>\n

So <\/span>Hearts<\/strong> will enter the Europa League at the play-off round, with <\/span>Kilmarnock<\/strong> in the second qualifying round, while <\/span>St Mirren<\/strong> will enter the Europa Conference League at the second qualifying round.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bottom club <\/span>Livingston<\/strong> were relegated to the Scottish Championship on 4 May after <\/span>losing 4-1 at Motherwell,<\/span><\/a> while the 11th-placed team (St Johnstone or Ross County) will take on Championship side Raith Rovers in the two-legged play-off final.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scottish Championship<\/h3>\n
\"Dundee<\/span><\/span>
A goalless draw in their penultimate game of the season clinched an immediate return to the top flight for Dundee United<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dundee United<\/strong> were promoted to the Scottish Premiership as champions on 26 April after <\/span>a 0-0 draw at Airdrieonians.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

In the play-off final, <\/span>Raith Rovers<\/strong> will meet the 11th-placed Premiership side – over two legs – for the final place in next season’s top flight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bottom side <\/span>Arbroath<\/strong>‘s relegation to League One was confirmed <\/span>with a 5-0 thrashing<\/span><\/a> by Ayr United on 13 April. Ninth-placed <\/span>Inverness Caledonian Thistle<\/strong> must beat League One side Hamilton in the two-legged play-off final to retain their Championship status.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scottish League One<\/h3>\n
\"Falkirk<\/span><\/span>
Falkirk were assured of the title after Hamilton failed to win earlier in the day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Champions <\/span>Falkirk <\/strong>clinched automatic promotion to the Scottish Championship after rivals Hamilton drew 0-0 with Queen of the South just before they <\/span>won 7-1 at Montrose<\/span><\/a> on 30 March.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamilton Academical<\/strong> must beat ninth-placed Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the two-legged play-off final to secure promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bottom club <\/span>Edinburgh City<\/strong> were the first team in England or Scotland to be relegated after <\/span>losing 5-2 to Alloa<\/span><\/a> on 16 March. Ninth-placed <\/span>Stirling Albion<\/strong> will join them in League Two after <\/span>losing to Dumbarton in the play-off semi-finals<\/span><\/a> on 11 April.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scottish League Two<\/h3>\n
\"Stenhousemuir<\/span><\/span>
Stenhousemuir’s triumph was the first league title in the club’s history<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Stenhousemuir<\/strong> clinched automatic promotion to League One as champions on 6 March after <\/span>drawing 0-0 with East Fife.<\/span><\/a> Dumbarton<\/strong> were promoted on 17 May after <\/span>beating The Spartans in the play-off final.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Bottom side <\/span>Stranraer<\/strong> face a play-off against Lowland League winners <\/span>East Kilbride<\/strong> on 11 and 18 May for the final place in League Two for 2024-25.<\/span><\/p>\n
