The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is working on a plan to start a women\u2019s tournament in partnership with world governing body Fiba.<\/b><\/p>\n
The BAL is in its fourth year as a men\u2019s tournament, with the 2024 champions set to be decided on 1 June after play-offs involving eight teams in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n
BAL president Amadou Gallo Fall says work \u201cis already being done\u201d by his organisation to boost the women\u2019s game.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is a women\u2019s club championship that Fiba is running and we built the BAL on the foundation of club basketball that Fiba used to run,\u201d he told BBC Sport Africa.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe contribute towards investment in growing the women\u2019s game.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe foundation is laid. Ultimately, that day will come.\u201d<\/p>\n
A key challenge for Gallo Fall is to expand the female talent pool across the continent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to continue to support women’s participation in the sport and the development at grassroots level working with Fiba,\u201d the Senegalese added.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know the women\u2019s game is very popular in certain countries – Senegal, Mozambique, Egypt, Mali and Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to grow the women\u2019s game to make sure there are more countries playing the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
