{"id":18026,"date":"2024-05-30T10:15:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T10:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/thiago-braz-rio-2016-olympic-champion-given-16-month-doping-ban\/"},"modified":"2024-05-30T10:15:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T10:15:38","slug":"thiago-braz-rio-2016-olympic-champion-given-16-month-doping-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/thiago-braz-rio-2016-olympic-champion-given-16-month-doping-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Thiago Braz: Rio 2016 Olympic champion given 16-month doping ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Brazilian pole vaulter Thaigo Braz has been banned for 16 months by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for committing a doping offence.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Braz, the 2016 Rio Olympics champion, is deemed to have breached World Athletics Anti-Doping rules relating to the presence of the prohibited substance, ostarine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ostarine has similar effects to testosterone and is not approved for human consumption in any country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Braz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/athletics\/66341498\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">who was provisionally suspended last July,<\/a> said he unknowingly consumed the substance through sports supplements given to him by his nutritionist and will lodge an appeal against the ban with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 30-year-old won bronze at Tokyo 2020 but will now miss the Paris Olympics this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The AIU had originally sought a four-year sanction for Braz, adding he was \u201creckless\u201d and acted with \u201cindirect intent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the disciplinary tribunal ruled that although Braz knew about the the risk of contamination in using the supplements, he was not at &#8220;significant fault or negligence\u201d because he relied on advice from his medical team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The AIU may still appeal the length of the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cAthletes from Brazil, including Mr Braz, have been specifically educated about the dangers surrounding the use of supplements from compound pharmacies in Brazil,&#8221; said AIU Head Brett Clothier. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cIn the light of these very clear warnings, it is disappointing to be dealing with such a case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/athletics\/articles\/cjmm2kydw11o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian pole vaulter Thaigo Braz has been banned for 16 months by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for committing a doping offence.
