{"id":2162,"date":"2022-09-27T17:47:49","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T17:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/remco-evenepoel-belgium-rider-wins-world-championship-road-race-after-solo-breakaway\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T17:47:50","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T17:47:50","slug":"remco-evenepoel-belgium-rider-wins-world-championship-road-race-after-solo-breakaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/remco-evenepoel-belgium-rider-wins-world-championship-road-race-after-solo-breakaway\/","title":{"rendered":"Remco Evenepoel: Belgium rider wins World Championship road race after solo breakaway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1\">\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\">Belgium&#8217;s Remco Evenepoel claimed the World Championship road race title after producing a stunning solo breakaway win in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.0\">It caps off an incredible season for the 22-year-old, who became Belgium&#8217;s first Grand Tour champion in 44 years when he won the Vuelta a Espana.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">He finished two minutes and 21 seconds ahead of France&#8217;s Christophe Laporte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">One of the pre-race favourites, Mathieu van der Poel dropped out early after he was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cycling\/63025064\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.$link-2.0\">arrested on Saturday night.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">The 27-year-old Dutch rider was arrested and charged with assaulting two teenagers in Sydney after police were called to his hotel on the evening before the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">Evenepoel, who also won the one-day Liege-Bastogne-Liege monument race earlier this year, crossed the line in six hours, 16 minutes and eight seconds, after breaking clear with 25km remaining of the 266.9km race around the Australian city of Wollongong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s something I&#8217;ve been dreaming of and now after a monument, a big classic, a Grand Tour and now world champion, I think I&#8217;ve won everything I could this year,&#8221; Evenepoel said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think I will ever have a better season than this. I&#8217;m not going to see my bed tonight.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl rider made a breakaway move with 32km left and Alexey Lutsenko was the only rider to go with him, but Evenapoel dropped the Kazakh on a climb seven kilometres later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">&#8220;I felt quite quickly that I was stronger than Alexey and I wanted to go alone because there&#8217;s no time to waste on a circuit like this,&#8221; said Evenepoel, who also won a bronze medal in last weekend&#8217;s time trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;The last climb was super hard and my legs exploded but it&#8217;s the world championship, you just want to win the jersey.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Lutsenko was caught by four other riders in the closing kilometres but they then were too watchful of each other in the final kilometre, allowing a chasing bunch to catch and pass them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".wkcyrjs2zw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">Laporte eventually won the sprint finish for silver, with Australia&#8217;s Michael Matthews third.
