St Mirren footballer Shaun Rooney has been charged with assaulting an 18-year-old woman in a Glasgow takeaway.<\/p>\n
The defender is also charged with breach of the peace involving an 18-year-old male during the incident on 19 September.<\/p>\n
Police Scotland confirmed the latter charge is being treated as a hate crime.<\/p>\n
The Paisley club previously confirmed the 28-year-old had been suspended pending a precautionary investigation into an “alleged incident” and that he would not be playing for the Premiership side in the immediate future. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
A spokesperson for the force said: “A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on an 18-year-old woman and a breach of the peace against an 18-year-old man in takeaway premises on Queen Street, Glasgow, in the early hours of Thursday, 19 September. “<\/p>\n
“He was released on an undertaking to appeal at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.”<\/p>\n
Rooney joined St Mirren this year, after playing for several clubs in Scotland and England.<\/p>\n
He has made 10 appearances for the Paisley side so far this season.<\/p>\n
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson said the matter was a “board level decision” and that he was concentrating on the football side of things ahead of a game against Motherwell on Saturday. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
