{"id":23372,"date":"2024-12-05T09:42:37","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T09:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/hailey-davidson-lpga-updates-policy-on-transgender-women-golfers\/"},"modified":"2024-12-05T09:42:38","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T09:42:38","slug":"hailey-davidson-lpga-updates-policy-on-transgender-women-golfers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/hailey-davidson-lpga-updates-policy-on-transgender-women-golfers\/","title":{"rendered":"Hailey Davidson: LPGA updates policy on transgender women golfers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Transgender women who have gone through male puberty will not be allowed to compete on leading women&#8217;s golf tours from next year.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Updated rules on gender policy will also apply to United States Golf Association events including the US Women&#8217;s Open and will prevent Scottish-born American Hailey Davidson from seeking membership of the LPGA Tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 31-year-old, who transitioned after playing men&#8217;s college golf in the United States, failed to qualify for a card on the leading women&#8217;s tour when finishing 95th at the second stage of LPGA Q School in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Davidson&#8217;s participation prompted protests, with 275 female players signing a letter asking for changes to policies which allowed people recorded male at birth to compete in women&#8217;s events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Previously, the LPGA allowed players to compete if they had undergone gender-affirming surgery after puberty and met hormone therapy requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But these rules have now been altered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The LPGA has updated its gender policy for competition eligibility, effective starting with the 2025 season,&#8221; the LPGA said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The policy &#8211; informed by a working group of top experts in medicine, science, sport physiology, golf performance and gender policy law &#8211; was developed with input from a broad array of stakeholders and prioritises the competitive integrity of women&#8217;s professional tournaments and elite amateur competitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This working group has advised that the effects of male puberty confer competitive advantages in golf performance compared to players who have not undergone male puberty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The new policy applies to the LPGA Tour, its feeder Epson Tour where Davidson would have been eligible to play, plus the Ladies European Tour and all other elite LPGA events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The statement added that players recorded as male at birth and who have gone through male puberty &#8220;are not eligible to compete in the aforementioned events&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The R&amp;A, which governs golf&#8217;s rules outside the United States and Mexico, is expected to adopt the same policy from 1 January next year for its women&#8217;s championships, including the AIG Women&#8217;s Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Davidson played on the men&#8217;s team at Wilmington University in Delaware before transferring to the men&#8217;s team at Christopher Newport in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Denmark&#8217;s Mianne Bagger became the first transgender golfer to play a professional event when competing in the 2004 Women&#8217;s Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the now 57-year-old subsequently became a critic of relaxed rules governing transgender participation in women&#8217;s sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Announcing the changed rule for 2025, the outgoing commissioner of the LPGA, Mollie Marcoux Samaan, said: &#8220;Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The policy represents our continued commitment to ensuring that all feel welcome within our organisation, while preserving the fairness and competitive equity of our elite competitions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Responding to the change on Instagram, Davidson said: &#8220;Can&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t see this coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Banned from the Epson and the LPGA. All the silence and people wanting to stay &#8216;neutral&#8217; thanks for absolutely nothing.
