as Guinea stripped of finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Guinea has lost the right to stage the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations owing to insufficient preparations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">The Confederation of African Football is to re-open bidding for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after stripping Guinea of the right to host the competition, with Morocco among the nations set to apply. <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">Caf president Patrice Motsepe was in the Guinean capital Conakry on Friday when he announced that the 24-team tournament will be removed because of a lack of suitably advancing infrastructure and facilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">&#8220;The 2025 Nations Cup allocated to Guinea will not take place there because we&#8217;re not yet ready in Guinea,&#8221; said Motsepe in a news conference after meeting the leadership of Guinea&#8217;s transitional government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Guinea has had nearly a decade to prepare for the finals, having originally been named as host of the 2023 Nations Cup in 2014, prior to then being asked to host in 2025 instead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The political situation in Guinea, which has been under military rule since a coup last year, had led to concerns over security and organisation for its Nations Cup hosting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">However, in August, Guinea&#8217;s military junta insisted it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/62729251\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.$link-2.0\">committed to hosting<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.3\"> the 2025 finals, and would release funds and fast-track access to land to help preparations for an event labelled an issue of &#8220;national and priority interest&#8221; by the head of the military government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;The Caf decision was taken in July and was reported to the transitional government in Guinea stating that where we are right now, there should be a process to allow new bids to come forward,&#8221; South African Motsepe said on Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;Caf is going to ask to receive new bids because the infrastructure and facilities are not appropriate or ready for Caf to host the 2025 Nations Cup in Guinea, and that&#8217;s the basis of the decision.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">Morocco, which hosted this year&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Africa Cup of Nations finals in July, intends to apply to host the 2025 finals, a source within the Royal Moroccan Football Federation indicated. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-10\">Revised aims<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Motsepe said he visited Conakry out of respect to discuss with local authorities how Guinea can improve its infrastructure to a level whereby it can host major events in future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;This will enable Guinea to bid for the African Nations Championship (Chan) which will take place after the Chan in 2023, in light of the decision not to proceed with the 2025 Nations Cup in Guinea,&#8221; Motsepe said in his news conference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;My encouragement is that Guinea should do their submission for Chan 2024 as a basis to submit a proposal for the 2027 Nations Cup.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">In response, Guinea&#8217;s sports minister Lansana Bea Dialla, a former boxer, admitted that his nation does not have the facilities at present to stage Africa&#8217;s biggest sport event in 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1p3avblxggm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;It is true that we have nothing as arguments to be able to convince the Caf president that we will be ready for the 2025 Nations Cup,&#8221;
