League One strugglers Cambridge have announced the departure of head coach Garry Monk after a run of one win in 13 league games. <\/b><\/p>\n

The former Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday boss was appointed in March when Neil Harris left the club after just 17 games in charge to take over at Millwall.<\/p>\n

Monk guided the U’s to the safety of 18th place in League One last season and major changes to the squad were made over the summer. <\/p>\n

But Cambridge only took one point from their first nine games of the current campaign and despite a run of three successive wins from mid-October, they have since slumped to the foot of the table.<\/p>\n

Monk leaves Cambridge eight points adrift of safety following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Exeter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The club’s majority owner Paul Barry said in a statement:, external<\/span><\/a> “We would like to thank Garry for his hard work and commitment to Cambridge United over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n

“He really bought into the club during his time with us. We are all very disappointed that it has not worked out in the way we would all have hoped.<\/p>\n

“In the end, the table does not lie and it is the right moment to make a change. There are 15 games remaining, and we must continue to fight together to preserve our League One status over the coming weeks.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
