{"id":30584,"date":"2025-06-02T20:20:58","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T20:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/formula-1-what-are-penalty-points-and-how-do-they-work\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T20:21:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T20:21:00","slug":"formula-1-what-are-penalty-points-and-how-do-they-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/formula-1-what-are-penalty-points-and-how-do-they-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Formula 1: What are penalty points and how do they work?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Formula 1 drivers will receive a one-race suspension if they pick up 12 penalty points on their super licence in a 12-month period.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Four-time world champion Max Verstappen will receive a one-race ban, should he pick up any penalty points in his next two races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Dutchman, 27, was handed three penalty points after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/formula1\/articles\/cgkd2675746o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">appearing to deliberately crash into Mercedes&#8217; George Russell<\/a> during the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for the collision but was later given three penalty points on his Federation Internationale de l&#8217;Automobile (FIA) super licence, taking him to 11 penalty points for the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Verstappen has two points which expire on 30 June, meaning should he avoid any further points at this month&#8217;s Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix, he would not reach the threshold for a suspension unless he receives three or more points before 27 October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Penalty points are given for a range of offences, with points handed out based on the severity of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These include causing collisions, driving too slowly in pit lanes and overtaking  while a red flag is being waved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Once drivers hit 12 points, they are banned for one race and all points are removed once their ban is served.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/formula1\/articles\/cr4z573e2z4o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Formula 1 drivers will receive a one-race suspension if they pick up 12 penalty points on their super licence in a 12-month period.
