He also guided Wales to the semi-finals of the 2011 and 2019 World Cups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">In his final season in charge, Wales reached the top of World Rugby&#8217;s rankings having recorded a 14-match unbeaten run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">Gatland departs Super Rugby side the Chiefs to return to Wales before Christmas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Pivac&#8217;s three year tenure saw Wales slip to ninth in the rankings, having won 13 games, lost 20 and drawn one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">2022 was a particularly disappointing year in which Wales suffered home defeats to Italy in the Six Nations and Georgia last month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">His highlights include a 2021 Six Nations title and a first a Test victory on South African soil in the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$image-13\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1055D\/production\/_127890966_cdf_191019_walesrugbytraining26.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/1055D\/production\/_127890966_cdf_191019_walesrugbytraining26.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1055D\/production\/_127890966_cdf_191019_walesrugbytraining26.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/1055D\/production\/_127890966_cdf_191019_walesrugbytraining26.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/1055D\/production\/_127890966_cdf_191019_walesrugbytraining26.jpg 976w\" alt=\"Warren Gatland, Alun Wyn Jones and George North\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$image-13.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$image-13.1\">Warren Gatland took Wales to three World Cups, they finished fourth in the most recent in 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">Gatland said he was &#8220;very much looking forward to returning&#8221;, with his immediate priorities the Six Nations and World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;This is an opportunity to achieve something with a talented group of players in a country so passionate about rugby,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;A country which made my family and I so welcome, when we first arrived 15 years ago, and all the time we were there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">&#8220;There is little time for sentiment, professional sport is all about preparation, values and results. There will be new challenges as there always is with a change in head coach, but for me the environment, the players and their families will always come first. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;We must prepare to the best of our ability in the time available. We will value and respect each other, we will work hard and, if we get this right together, performances and results will follow.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">Pivac said he was &#8220;extremely sad&#8221; to stand down after what he called a &#8220;speedy review process&#8221; of the autumn campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;Unfortunately, the results or performances this year were not all as we hoped. As a group we all take responsibility for that, but me in particular as head coach,&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;We have played some really good rugby at times, but needed to do that more consistently. However, I know that there is a strong foundation for the squad to progress to great things in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;I would like to thank the players, coaches, management and the WRU for their commitment, support and hard work in my time as head coach and to all the people in Wales for making me feel at home here over the past eight years.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">The WRU&#8217;s chief executive officer Steve Phillips said it had been a difficult decision to make, with Wales kicking off their World Cup campaign in just 10 months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;This is one of the toughest calls to make in sport, but the review process has reached its conclusion and we have acted quickly and efficiently in the very best interests of our national team,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;Ultimately we are in the results business and we have agreed with Wayne that the current trajectory for Wales is not where we want it to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;We thank him sincerely for his time, enthusiasm, diligence and effort, which is unquestioned, as head coach over the last three years.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">Phillips added they are bringing back &#8220;one of the very best coaches&#8221; in Gatland and they are &#8220;extremely excited&#8221; about this latest chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">&#8220;We were sorry to see him go when he left and we are delighted that he has agreed to return. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".13uk9j0p8rg.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;He will undoubtedly be able to make an immediate impact, just as he did when he joined us for the first time in 2008.
