We went down a route which turned out to be the wrong route. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;Sometimes it takes you a long time to dig yourself out of that hole. Now I feel we&#8217;ve dug ourselves out of that hole and we&#8217;re building on top of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;We are a step behind Red Bull and Ferrari and we&#8217;ve got a lot of catching up to do &#8211; but we&#8217;re definitely going to be in a much stronger position from race one next year than we were this year.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-9\">&#8216;With Mercedes, you expect victories&#8217;<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$image-10\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$image-10.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$image-10.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$image-10.1\">Mercedes have won the F1 constructors&#8217; championship eight times<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">King&#8217;s Lynn-born Russell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/formula1\/58474646\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.$link-2.0\">joined Mercedes for the 2022 season, replacing Valtteri Bottas,<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.3\"> after beginning his F1 career with Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">And he achieved seven other podium finishes as well as his maiden victory, despite the team being unable to match the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari for much of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">&#8220;When you join a team like Mercedes you&#8217;re expecting victories. I felt ready to fight for race wins and championships this year but you&#8217;ve just got to manage your expectations,&#8221; Russell said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to change those sights slightly and it&#8217;s been really intriguing for me this year, seeing how the team deal with this situation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m here for the long haul and even though I wanted victories and [to be] fighting for that championship in 2022, as a team these struggles are going to set us up for the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;I hope I look back in 10 years&#8217; time and say the 2022 season was a positive one in the journey.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Despite outperforming seven-times world champion Hamilton, for whom five second-place finishes were his best of the campaign, Russell is aware he has to keep &#8220;raising the bar&#8221; in terms of his own performance and contribution to the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;If you&#8217;d told me at the start of the year that I&#8217;d be finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton [in the drivers&#8217; standings], I&#8217;d have been very happy because nine times out of 10 that probably means you&#8217;re going to be world champion,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a little bit frustrating that this year wasn&#8217;t that year. We were both fighting for P4, P5, P6 and we don&#8217;t want to be in this position, so I&#8217;m not going to walk away from this season with huge amounts of pride because I finished fourth in the championship. He&#8217;s the greatest of all time so I&#8217;m in a very privileged position to go up directly alongside him but also learn from him.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".g1zv7u9msw.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">He added: &#8220;I&#8217;m really excited for 2023.
