Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as Ghana’s head coach for the upcoming World Cup.<\/b><\/p>\n

The 73-year-old Portuguese has replaced Otto Addo, who was sacked on 31 March<\/a> after friendly defeats by Germany and Austria.<\/p>\n

The Black Stars, who are in the same World Cup group as England, also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo.<\/p>\n

Queiroz had two spells as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford, first from 2002-2003 and then from 2004-2008, either side of a stint as Real Madrid head coach.<\/p>\n

He was most recently in charge of Oman but left the role last month after they failed to qualify for the World Cup.<\/p>\n

“I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career,” Queiroz said.<\/p>\n

“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”<\/p>\n

Mozambique-born Queiroz led Portugal to the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup and has coached Iran at the past three editions of the tournament.<\/p>\n

Queiroz has also held coaching positions with Egypt, Japan, Colombia, and South Africa, and previously led Portugal in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n

Ghana play their first World Cup match in Group L against Panama on 17 June before fixtures against England and Croatia on 23 June and 27 June respectively.<\/p>\n

This summer’s tournament is being co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
