Colombian Cristian Camilo Munoz has died from a knee infection following a crash six days ago.<\/b><\/p>\n
The 30-year-old did not finish the Tour du Jura one-day race in France in which the accident occurred, and was treated by medics following the incident. <\/p>\n
He then travelled with his NU Colombia team to Spain for another race, where he was admitted to hospital with a “difficult-to-treat” infection. <\/p>\n
Munoz, whose previous teams included World Tour powerhouses UAE Team Emirates, came fourth in the 2024 Colombian Road Race Championships, and won a stage of the under-23 Giro d’Italia in 2018.<\/p>\n
His team said: “Today we bid farewell Cristian Munoz, a cyclist who turned every kilometer into a show of passion, discipline and heart.<\/p>\n
“[His] death occurred as a result of medical complications arising from the accident he suffered last Saturday.<\/p>\n
“Following the crash, Cristian was initially treated at a medical centre, where he received treatment for an injury to his left knee. <\/p>\n
“Once the team arrived in Oviedo, Spain, Cristian was examined again at a clinic, where medical staff detected a difficult-to-treat infection that required further specialist care.<\/p>\n
“His condition deteriorated and, despite all the efforts of the medical team, Cristian passed away on Friday morning.”<\/p>\n
Safety in road racing has been called into question following a number of fatalities and serious injuries.<\/p>\n
Switzerland’s Muriel Furrer died after crashing in the 2024 Road World Championships women’s junior race, going undetected in undergrowth for more than an hour before being discovered by organisers.<\/p>\n
In 2023 another Swiss, Gino Mader, died following a high-speed crash on a descent during the Tour de Suisse.<\/a><\/p>\n Cycling’s governing body the UCI introduced a number of new safety protocols the same year to try to mitigate the high risks for riders and spectators in a sport which takes place on public roads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
