The North Stand at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium will be renamed to honour Great Britain track star Matthew Hudson-Smith during August’s European Athletics Championships.<\/b><\/p>\n
Olympic silver medallist Hudson-Smith, who has won four European titles, was born in nearby Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old attended a surprise unveiling of the Matthew Hudson-Smith Stand, with his family present, plus his first coach Sharon Morris, Team GB 4x400m team coach Martyn Rooney and local dignitaries.<\/p>\n
“It caught me off-guard walking in to see the stand is going to be named after me, and it was a special moment to share it with my family,” said Hudson-Smith.<\/p>\n
“It’s just an indication of all the hard work I’ve put in and to get a stand named after me is the icing on the cake of a great career and now I want to add more to it at Europeans.”<\/p>\n
Hudson-Smith has twice won individual gold in the 400m at the European Championships, in Berlin in 2018 and in Munich in 2022.<\/p>\n
He also won 4x400m gold in Zurich in 2014 and repeated the feat eight years later, while he also has three other podium finishes at the championships.<\/p>\n
The Birchfield Harriers athlete missed out on Olympic 400m gold<\/a> by four-hundredths of a second in a dramatic finish at Paris 2024, but he was unable to reach the World Championship final<\/a> in Tokyo last year.<\/p>\n He started his 2026 outdoor season last month with a second place in the 400m in the Diamond League at Rabat<\/a>.<\/p>\n The European Athletics Championships, the first to be held in the United Kingdom, will run from 10-16 August in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
