{"id":4784,"date":"2023-01-18T02:15:30","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T02:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/arthur-ashe-how-the-former-australian-open-champion-impacted-nigerian-tennis\/"},"modified":"2023-01-18T02:15:31","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T02:15:31","slug":"arthur-ashe-how-the-former-australian-open-champion-impacted-nigerian-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/arthur-ashe-how-the-former-australian-open-champion-impacted-nigerian-tennis\/","title":{"rendered":"Arthur Ashe: How the former Australian Open champion impacted Nigerian tennis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Ashe was the reigning Wimbledon singles champion at the time of the attempted coup on his visit to Nigeria in 1976<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">In February 1976, Arthur Ashe &#8211; three-time Grand Slam singles champion, including the 1970 Australian Open &#8211; and some of his contemporaries cheerfully jetted off to Nigeria to participate in the Lagos Tennis Classic.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">A week later, they were forced off the court at gunpoint &#8211; and were soon fleeing the country for their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">Ashe was the most famous member of the group that had flown to Africa for the Lagos-based round of the World Championship of Tennis (WCT), which had a $60,000 prize fund courtesy of business tycoon Olatunji Ajisomo Alabi &#8211; popularly known as Lord Rumens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Ashe was the reigning Wimbledon singles champion, but also on the trip were Tom Okker, Dick Crealy, Jeff Borowiak and Brian Fairlie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The tournament&#8217;s big claim at the time was that it was the first of its kind in black Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">Coincidentally, Brazilian football icon Pele was also in Nigeria that February on an ambassadorial tour sponsored by Pepsi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">The director of Nigeria&#8217;s International Tennis Academy, Godwin Kienka, remembers it as a great moment for lovers of sport in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;Arthur Ashe was as famous as Pele was in football. Dick Stockton, Bob Lutz, Ashe and Borowiak &#8211; in the quarter-finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">A day later, the LLTC was filled to capacity with spectators on centre court excitedly taking their seats to watch Ashe play his semi-final against Borowiak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">But, just as it began, five men marched on to the court and stopped play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">&#8220;Arthur Ashe was actually playing a match when the army guys &#8211; upset about the coup and the murder of Murtala Mohammed &#8211; came,&#8221; remembered Kienka, picking up the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">&#8220;And they said, &#8216;what are you guys doing here?'&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">According to Kienka, Ashe and Borowiak raised their hands in a surrender motion. They were told &#8220;get out of here&#8221; and then &#8220;they led [Ashe] out with a gun.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">As events unfolded, the capacity crowd also began to flee, running from the stadium into the street. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Kienka told BBC Sport Africa how Ashe went into the changing room where the director of the tournament was holed up. From there they ran into the crowds until they found a cab sent by the US Embassy to come and collect them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;Then, when they got into traffic, the car couldn&#8217;t move,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;They got down and started running towards the embassy. We saw the same game being played with the same racket we hold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">&#8220;Secondly, not too long after, we had a lot of Nigerians &#8211; up to the early 1980s &#8211; that went even as far as playing in the Grand Slams.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">Nigeria has never had a Grand Slam champion but Kienka says Ashe&#8217;s memorable visit did bring national success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">&#8220;The young boys who were ball boys and officials at the tournament are still talking about it to today,&#8221; said the ITA director. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">&#8220;Many of them became national champions in the country. The inspiration came from the visit of Arthur Ashe.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">Indeed, Kienka thinks it ultimately led to a &#8220;golden age&#8221; of Nigerian tennis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">&#8220;The impact still lives on, the legacy is enormous,&#8221; he claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the same as when you have Messi, or Ronaldo, or Mbappe coming to Nigeria and playing football with children in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".21eyuxr0qqy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">&#8220;What impact they have on their sports career cannot be quantified.
