{"id":5858,"date":"2023-02-14T02:19:23","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T02:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/referee-abuse-hundreds-tell-of-safety-fears-at-grassroots-level-2\/"},"modified":"2023-02-14T02:19:24","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T02:19:24","slug":"referee-abuse-hundreds-tell-of-safety-fears-at-grassroots-level-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/referee-abuse-hundreds-tell-of-safety-fears-at-grassroots-level-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Referee abuse: Hundreds tell of safety fears at grassroots level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$video-1\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$video-1.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$video-1.0.0\"><noscript data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$video-1.0.0.1\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--video\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$video-1.1\">Chris Sutton explores referee abuse in grassroots football<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\">Hundreds of grassroots referees have told the BBC they fear for their safety when refereeing and are dissatisfied with current measures to tackle abuse.  <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.0\">More than 900 referees in England responded to a Radio 5 Live questionnaire, with 293 saying they had been physically abused by spectators, players, coaches or managers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Some described being punched, headbutted and spat at. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">Almost all the respondents had experienced some form of verbal abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">The president of the Referees&#8217; Association in England, which distributed the questionnaire to its 7,000 members, says the abuse of match officials is having a significant impact on their mental health and they are only ever &#8220;one decision away from a smack in the mouth&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;One day in this country a referee will lose his or her life. It happened in Holland a few years ago and they really changed their culture in football,&#8221; said Paul Field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">The Football Association (FA) says a small minority of people abuse referees but such behaviour is &#8220;completely unacceptable&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">It has pledged to &#8220;continue to do everything we can&#8221; to stamp it out, including stronger sanctions and the launch of a three-year strategy to help tackle the issue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">A trial of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/63218270\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.0\">referees wearing body cameras <\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.3\">in adult grassroots football is planned to start this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Field said anyone banned at grassroots level for abusing referees should not be allowed to attend any matches and called for the FA to inform elite clubs, with a view to preventing them from buying tickets for games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">He said some parents&#8217; behaviour on the sidelines was &#8220;shocking&#8221; while players often imitate the behaviour of top-level professionals who question decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">There were 122 referees aged 17 and under who responded to the questionnaire &#8211; more than 100 said they had been verbally abused by coaches\/managers (105), spectators (109) or players (102).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-15\">What the questionnaire revealed<\/h3>\n<ul data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16\">\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-0\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-0.0\">Of the 927 respondents, 908 said they&#8217;d experienced <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-0.$undefined-bold-1\">verbal abuse<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-0.2\"> from either spectators, players, coaches or managers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-1\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-1.0\">Many (778) had been <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-1.$undefined-bold-1\">sworn at<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-1.2\"> while officiating, while 375 had received personal abuse about things like their appearance, gender, race or sexual orientation.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-2\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-2.0\">Some 293 experienced <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-2.$undefined-bold-1\">physical abuse<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-2.2\"> from either spectators, players, coaches or managers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-3\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-3.0\">A <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-3.$undefined-bold-1\">threat of violence<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-3.2\"> against them or their loved ones had been made against 283 of the respondents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-4\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-4.0\">Verbal or physical abuse had negatively affected the <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-4.$undefined-bold-1\">mental health<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-4.2\"> of 361 who answered the questionnaire,.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-5\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-5.0\">There were 57 people who had received a <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-5.$undefined-bold-1\">death threat<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-5.2\"> against them or their loved ones. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-6\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-6.0\">The amount of abuse towards referees is worse now than five years ago, according to 440 of the respondents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-7\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-7.0\">There were 378 of the 927 referees who said they are &#8220;often&#8221; or &#8220;sometimes&#8221; worried about their safety. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-8\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$list-16.$list-item-8.0\">Many respondents (506) were either moderately or very dissatisfied with measures currently being taken to tackle referee abuse by the English FA. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><em data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.$italic-0\">*The figures in the questionnaire are not statistically representative.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-18\">What the referees say<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$image-19\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$image-19.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$image-19.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$image-19.1\">There are about 28,000 referees in England<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.$bold-0\">Ryan, 30, from Lancashire, once had to hide in a back street for an hour after being chased by players.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;Every week when you go out as a referee, you think what&#8217;s going to happen this week. I sometimes don&#8217;t want to turn up. It&#8217;s freezing cold and you&#8217;re going to stand there for 90 minutes to be abused, for \u00a330, which is what you get paid,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;Without a referee turning up at the weekend, you&#8217;re not going to have football and grassroots will eventually end up going into the abyss.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">He called for referees to be issued with body cameras, which the FA is hoping to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/63218270\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.$link-2.0\">pilot in a trial this year.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.$bold-0\">Megan, 18, from Oxfordshire, had a parent come on the pitch with raised fists after she sent a child off.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;He was yelling abuse at me and saying this is why girls shouldn&#8217;t be in football,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;I think he got a six-match ban and fined, but that isn&#8217;t enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;It was probably the scariest experience I&#8217;ve had when I&#8217;ve been watching, playing or reffing football. It really had an impact on my mental health, I was just worried all the time. I took two weeks off and worked my way back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">&#8220;All referees get abuse and I also get abuse because of my gender &#8211; I&#8217;m female in a male-dominated area. I&#8217;ve had people comment on my chest in the middle of a game.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.$bold-0\">Adrian, 59, Portsmouth: <\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.1\">&#8220;In nearly 24 years of refereeing, I have been threatened, verbally abused, been told they know where I live, also been assaulted five times. Why I carry on I don&#8217;t know &#8211; suppose the love of football.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.$bold-0\">Bill, 74, Leamington Spa:<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.1\"> &#8220;I have been stopped from driving my car by players lying in front of my car and jumping on the bonnet.  Quite a few years ago I was punched from behind and kicked on the floor. I don&#8217;t look my age and have vast experience with a good reputation so I can handle myself. But younger refs are walking away.&#8221;  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.$bold-0\">Joe, 18, Romford: <\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.1\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve been assaulted by a grown adult player when I was 16, threatened multiple times by managers and parents. A player at under-14 level threatened to have me stabbed and &#8216;get his gang on me&#8217;. Managers have threatened to see me in the car park. Players have also said this. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">&#8220;We need legislation at government level which offers us protection. The police need to take assaults on referees as criminal matters not just &#8216;a football matter&#8217;, and the FA needs to invest more and increase sanctions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><strong data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.$bold-0\">Jacob, 15, Essex:<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.1\"> &#8220;I&#8217;ve had players at under-13 level swearing at me and parents undermining my authority.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-34\">&#8216;Players have a responsibility to tone it down&#8217; &#8211; Sutton<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton &#8211; whose father was a referee &#8211; was asked by Radio 5 Live to referee his first match,  a junior game, to find out what it&#8217;s like on the other side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">&#8220;Any form of abuse is totally unacceptable,&#8221; said the former Norwich, Blackburn, Celtic and Chelsea forward who presents the BBC&#8217;s 606 football phone-in show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an issue that needs to be dealt with, otherwise grassroots football won&#8217;t survive.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">Sutton has admitted to previously confronting a young referee while watching his son play and now wants to address the issue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.0\">&#8220;I walked on the field because I was concerned about how badly injured he was. I shouldn&#8217;t have done that. I realise how difficult it is,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">Sutton said players at all levels should stop swearing at referees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41\"><span data-reactid=\".7w0tyroj3c.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41.0\">&#8220;We see Premier League and other professional players do that on a regular basis. I&#8217;ve done it.
