but even so, the recent age testing furore surrounding regional qualifiers for this year&#8217;s Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations contained a hint of farce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Chad at least made it to Cameroon before being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/64250590\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-2.0\">disqualified by in-tournament testing<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.3\">, while the hosts were forced to dismiss more than 30 potential players who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/64154037\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-5\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-5.0\">failed pre-tournament tests ordered by Samuel Eto&#8217;o<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.6\">, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker who is now president of the country&#8217;s football federation (Fecafoot).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">But speaking to BBC Sport Africa, a leading sports scientist, who has advised national football associations around the world, has questioned the one-size-fits-all application of the age-defining biomarkers provided by the tests, stating the saga must be a &#8220;watershed moment&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">&#8220;What&#8217;s being measured by the MRI might not be the most accurate way of measuring that individual&#8217;s age,&#8221; said Dr Adam Hawkey, associate professor of sport science and human performance at Solent University Southampton. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;Unless you&#8217;re conducting regular measurements of an individual, at designated ages that you can prove, and having that data amassed over a period of time, then their biomarkers (may) show, in terms of the data that&#8217;s available, that they are older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;Interventions need to be put in place to understand that individual as a person, not just as a sports performer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;There are some issues and there are sympathies with some of those players that may well be 17 &#8211; but also some appreciation of the work that&#8217;s being done to make the sport fairer,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">&#8220;We have to make sure that if we&#8217;re using these measures to exclude players then they&#8217;re as accurate as possible.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-11\">How the test works<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Football&#8217;s world governing body, Fifa, introduced MRI scans at the 2009 Under-17 World Cup which took place in Nigeria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">That decision followed years of accusations and allegations directed at African youth football.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">MRI scans use magnetic fields and radio waves to penetrate the skin, allowing medical professionals to see things like bone and organs underneath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">In this instance, the MRI looks at the bones in a player&#8217;s wrist, searching for biomarkers that are produced, with the most common one used to distinguish between age groups being the rate of fusion between the bone and its cartilage, a strong, flexible tissue that sits in joints to add a layer of protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-16\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:133.25242718446603%;\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-16.0\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-17\">An &#8216;opportunity&#8217; to improve player health<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">Alongside his work with national football associations, Dr Hawkey has also advised various Olympic committees and professional bodies about issues relating to health and performance, including carrying out various tests on English Premier League footballers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">He believes this must be a wake up call for sport on many fronts to inspire more rigorous and regular testing across the world &#8211; not just when it comes to age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">&#8220;There&#8217;s an opportunity here to use technologies, such as MRI scans, to test a whole range of other factors that relate to cardiac risk in the young, as well as looking at heart failure, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s no different than WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) having to regularly look at the way they assess the impact of steroids or other performance enhancing drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;The people involved in this are individuals, they are human beings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;Not only do we have to look after them, in terms of their future careers, but we also have to use this technology to identify any potential health issues that might arise.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">In 2003, midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe passed away after collapsing mid-match while playing for Cameroon. One of his teammates in that game, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/64208923\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.$link-2.0\">Modeste M&#8217;Bami, recently died after suffering a heart attack<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.3\"> at only 40 years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">Foe&#8217;s tragedy was the first high-profile example but since then numerous players have experienced heart issues on the field of play including Manchester United&#8217;s Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, now back playing after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/57456002\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$link-2.0\">his collapse during a match at Euro 2020<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-27\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-27.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-27.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/148B2\/production\/_128664148_eriksen.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/148B2\/production\/_128664148_eriksen.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/148B2\/production\/_128664148_eriksen.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/148B2\/production\/_128664148_eriksen.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/148B2\/production\/_128664148_eriksen.jpg 976w\" alt=\"Denmark team-mates form a ring around the collapsed Christian Eriksen\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-27.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$image-27.1\">The collapse of Denmark&#8217;s Christian Eriksen during a match at Euro 2020 caused great distress for team-mates and fans alike, although fortunately the midfielder is now back playing again<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a watershed moment where we have the technology, we have the expertise and the knowledge, and it&#8217;s just making sure that we do this in the most professional manner we can,&#8221; Dr Hawkey said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a real responsibility for clubs, countries and organisations like Fifa to ensure the well-being of all those that participate in the wonderful sport that is football.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-30\">The fight against age fraud<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">Dr Hawkey thinks the issue relating directly to age testing is not one that can be solved overnight due to the complexities of the ageing process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">But he fully backs the idea that widespread testing should now begin, using it to expand a database of results that is currently extremely small and unrepresentative of a diverse global populace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">&#8220;Unfortunately, at present there&#8217;s no single indicator that can be used as a gold standard to estimate the ageing process,&#8221; said the 45-year-old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">&#8220;Researchers over the last 50 years have tried to come up with one test that fits across generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">&#8220;The best we have come up with so far is a kind of biological age which combines several biomarkers including blood measurements, bone density and mathematical modelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">&#8220;This needs to be handled very carefully and at the moment Fifa have to work with the information that they&#8217;ve got and they&#8217;re going to have to back themselves in terms of what they&#8217;re doing in the scientific research they&#8217;ve done.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">Ultimately, the abridged central zone qualifiers for the Under-17 Cup of Nations were completed and saw Cameroon and Congo-Brazzaville qualify for the finals in Algeria, with Central African Republic the one team to miss out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.0\">Whether or not organisers can do anything to avoid similar disruption ahead of April&#8217;s 12-team tournament remains to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".25bnwtxts16.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">The BBC has approached Fifa, who were unavailable for comment, and the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/64193811?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=KARANGA\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Adam Hawkey urges caution over how MRI results are used in sport to determine age It is an issue that has overshadowed African football for many years &#8211;
