tally of professional players increased to 25 ahead of Women&#8217;s Six Nations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Wales reached the World Cup quarter-final in the autumn, losing to eventual champions New Zealand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">Wales will have 25 professional players at their disposal in this year&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Six Nations after handing out 24 full-time deals for 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) issued 12 full-time contracts in 2022, the first year of the programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">The union has now doubled that tally, while Carys Williams-Morris will also be with the squad full-time thanks to her elite athlete status with the RAF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">The value of the contracts has not been disclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">However, WRU acting chief executive Nigel Walker says finances have increased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t have a number, but the top contracts are of greater value than those we issued last year,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">Walker said the WRU had worked closely with their counterparts around the United Kingdom on the maternity clause in the contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;The investment we put into the national programme last year paid clear dividends both on the field in terms of performances and results, and off it in terms of the all-round athlete development service provided within the programme,&#8221; Walker added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important we don&#8217;t stand still and we believe the enhanced investment in the programme this year will go some way not only to developing these players, but others who join the squad for training and tournaments.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Wales take on Ireland in their Six Nations opener on 25 March, and will be looking to build on last season&#8217;s third-place finish &#8211; their best in the competition since 2009 &#8211; as well as their run to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Of the 12 players that first signed professional contracts last year, 10 remain, with Jasmine Joyce leaving the set-up to rejoin the World Sevens Series and former captain Siwan Lillicrap retiring from international duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">A further 12 players signed part-time deals last year, the majority of whom have now become full-time, including promising young talents such as Sisilia Tuipulotu and Lleucu George.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Experienced number eight Sioned Harries and prop Cara Hope have not signed contracts due to work commitments, but will remain part of the set-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham said the contracts were a reflection of the commitment, performance and professionalism shown by the players last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;The initial contracts enabled us to make significant improvement throughout the year,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1s1496gwfp0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;Our aim this year will be to continue to build on the improvements we made in 2022.
