As much as I go through, it&#8217;s not going to change.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$image-8\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$image-8.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$image-8.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$image-8.1\">Manchester City made the Champions League final under Pep Guardiola in 2021 but were beaten by Premier League rivals Chelsea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">City will secure a place in this season&#8217;s quarter-finals if they win their last-16 second leg at home to RB Leipzig on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">The closest they have come to Champions League glory was when they reached the 2021 final, where they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/57268064\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.0\">lost 1-0 to Chelsea.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/61312216\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.$link-2.0\">late fightback by Real Madrid<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.3\"> prevented City returning to the final last season, but in Guardiola&#8217;s first four seasons at Etihad Stadium they failed to progress past the quarter-finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">City were upset by French sides Monaco and Lyon, while suffering agonising exits against Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham, with the latter coming after VAR played a big role in the outcome of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/47953693\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.0\">thrilling second leg at the Etihad.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">In November, Guardiola, who won the Champions League twice as Barcelona coach, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/63727335\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.$link-2.0\">signed a two-year contract extension to 2025<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.3\"> and said he wanted &#8220;to stay and continue fighting for trophies&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve not won it but we&#8217;ve done really well in the Champions League,&#8221; said City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;I know people base everything on only winning but I feel there&#8217;s been a lot of circumstances in these kind of games &#8211; the Madrid game, the Tottenham game where we deserved to go through but didn&#8217;t. These are moments in games where these things happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">&#8220;Obviously I want to win it but I know that, as long as we don&#8217;t, I&#8217;ll come here and get the same questions and I&#8217;m fine because people judge you on that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;We just try to win these games and be the best people and team we can be.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-19\">Guardiola tells De Bruyne to focus on &#8216;simple things&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">De Bruyne has registered 17 assists in 34 appearances this season, three more than the two-time Premier League player of the season managed in 45 games last term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">But Guardiola has started the Belgium midfielder on the bench in four of City&#8217;s past nine top-flight games and has told the 31-year-old to focus on the &#8220;simple things&#8221; to get back to his best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been a difficult season for all of us, me included, [because of] the World Cup and many things,&#8221; said Guardiola.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".uw9pg8uzeo.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to discover Kevin. Kevin has an ability to do it.
