decision to ban transgender women from female world-ranking events<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\">UK Athletics has banned transgender women from competing in the female category in its competitions and events in the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">UKA said competitions it licenses would be run under the new World Athletics regulations when they come into effect from midnight on 31 March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">It added it &#8220;appreciates the efforts&#8221; of World Athletics to &#8220;protect the female category&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">The governing body &#8211; which contributed to the formation of World Athletics&#8217; policy &#8211; said it had received the &#8220;required assurances&#8221; that the sporting exemption in the Equality Act 2010 applies to the Gender Recognition Act 2004, after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/athletics\/64514819\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.$link-2.0\">previous concerns.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">That exemption states sporting organisations can discriminate on grounds of sex in a &#8220;gender-affected activity&#8221; and discriminate on grounds of gender reassignment where necessary to secure &#8220;fair competition&#8221; or &#8220;the safety of competitors&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">UKA said its position is that athletics should &#8220;remain an inclusive sport&#8221; but it is &#8220;fair&#8221; that athletes who have gone through male puberty should be excluded from the female category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">In developing its transgender eligibility policy, &#8220;consideration will be given&#8221; to changing the current male category to an open category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Under previous rules, World Athletics required transgender women to reduce their amount of blood testosterone to a maximum of five nanomoles per litre, and stay under this threshold continuously for a period of 12 months before competing in the female category. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">As part of its transitional arrangements, UKA said any transgender athlete who had already entered a competition having complied with its 2021 policy, which applied the World Athletics rules at the time, will remain eligible to compete in that specific competition but may not accept any prize or have their results counted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">UKA will also apply World Athletics&#8217; regulations for athletes with differences in sex development (DSD).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/differences-in-sex-development\/\" class=\"story-body__external-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1\"><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1.0\">DSD is a group of rare conditions<\/span><span class=\"gs-u-ml- gel-icon\" style=\"height:15px;width:15px;\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1.1\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1.1.0\"><title data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1.1.0.0\">external-link<\/title><path d=\"M12 0v5h11.5l-5 5H0v22h22V17.5l-2 2V30H2V12h14.5l-7.8 7.7 3.6 3.6L27 8.5V20h5V0H12z\" data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.$link-1.1.0.1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".evfdzb17ey.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.2\"> whereby a person&#8217;s hormones, genes and\/or reproductive organs may be a mix of male and female characteristics.
