Tadej Pogacar won back-to-back Tour de France titles in 2020 and 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar won the Tour of Flanders to become the first male cyclist since 1975 to claim victory in both the prestigious one-day race and the Tour de France.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pogacar is the third Tour winner to triumph in Flanders after France’s Louison Bobet (1955) and Belgian great Eddy Merckx (1975).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“It was amazing. It’s a day I’ll never forget,” said 24-year-old Pogacar.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is his third victory in one of the five Monument one-day races.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pogacar has previously won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro di Lombardia.<\/span><\/p>\n

He finished 16 seconds ahead of Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel – who won the race last year – with Denmark’s Mads Pederson third.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pogacar pulled away from the pack chasing former champion Pederson on the cobbled Old Quaremont hill with about 20km to go and hung on for victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I knew I had to go solo in the Quaremont to have a chance to win and that’s what I did, although I was at the limit before,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I could retire after today and would be proud of my career.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Pogacar won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021 and the two Monument wins missing from his collection are Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘A big error’ – Maciejuk sorry for crash<\/h3>\n

Filip Maciejuk has apologised after causing a mass fall of about 40 riders about 140km into the 273km cobbled race.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maciejuk hit a pothole hidden by a puddle on a grass verge as he tried to get around the peloton and veered into the other riders.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Polish rider was disqualified from the race and later said: “I’m really sorry for my mistake and causing the crash.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I hope all those involved are in good health and safe. This should not happen and was a big error in my judgement.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Belgian rider <\/span>Lotte Kopecky<\/strong>, 27, retained the Women’s Tour of Flanders title, while ADQ team-mate Demi Vollering of the Netherlands came second. Italian Elisa Longo Borghini finished third. <\/span><\/p>\n
