It&#8217;s a day I&#8217;ll never forget,&#8221; said 24-year-old Pogacar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">It is his third victory in one of the five Monument one-day races.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">Pogacar has previously won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro di Lombardia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">He finished 16 seconds ahead of Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel &#8211; who won the race last year &#8211; with Denmark&#8217;s Mads Pederson third.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">Pogacar pulled away from the pack chasing former champion Pederson on the cobbled Old Quaremont hill with about 20km to go and hung on for victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;I knew I had to go solo in the Quaremont to have a chance to win and that&#8217;s what I did, although I was at the limit before,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">&#8220;I could retire after today and would be proud of my career.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Pogacar won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021 and the two Monument wins missing from his collection are Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-11\">&#8216;A big error&#8217; &#8211; Maciejuk sorry for crash<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Filip Maciejuk has apologised after causing a mass fall of about 40 riders about 140km into the 273km cobbled race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Maciejuk hit a pothole hidden by a puddle on a grass verge as he tried to get around the peloton and veered into the other riders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">The Polish rider was disqualified from the race and later said: &#8220;I&#8217;m really sorry for my mistake and causing the crash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;I hope all those involved are in good health and safe. This should not happen and was a big error in my judgement.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">Belgian rider <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.$bold-1\">Lotte Kopecky<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".1dmp71yivw8.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.2\">, 27, retained the Women&#8217;s Tour of Flanders title, while ADQ team-mate Demi Vollering of the Netherlands came second.
