{"id":7718,"date":"2023-04-04T13:35:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T13:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/swim-england-restricts-trans-women-in-female-events\/"},"modified":"2023-04-04T13:35:45","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T13:35:45","slug":"swim-england-restricts-trans-women-in-female-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/sport\/swim-england-restricts-trans-women-in-female-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Swim England restricts trans women in female events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">In June 2022, Fina members voted to stop transgender athletes from competing in women&#8217;s elite races<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">Swim England has said it will stop transgender women from competing in its licensed female competitions, instead introducing a separate open category.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">The open category is for those &#8220;with a birth sex of male, trans or non-binary competitors and any competitor not eligible for the female category&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">Swim England said the new policy was &#8220;justified and proportionate in the pursuit of fair competition&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">It added that &#8220;inclusion and fairness&#8221; was at its &#8220;very heart&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The new policy applies to swimming &#8211; indoor and outdoor &#8211; artistic swimming, diving and water polo and will come into effect on 1 September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">It refers only to Swim England competitions and includes those organised by the body&#8217;s member regions, counties and clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">In June 2022, swimming&#8217;s world governing body Fina <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/swimming\/61853450\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.$link-2.0\">banned transgender swimmers<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.3\"> from women&#8217;s elite events if they went through male puberty. It also said it was aiming to establish an &#8216;open&#8217; category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">Swim England&#8217;s policy differs across various disciplines and contains provision for self-identification at lower-level unlicensed or recreational events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">Events where the new open category will be used include licensed competitions and events where times can be submitted to national rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">&#8220;In order for all aquatic disciplines to be enjoyed as sport, there must be inclusive opportunities for transgender participants to compete,&#8221; Swim England said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">&#8220;However, it is widely recognised that fairness of competition must be protected and Swim England believes the creation of open and female categories is the best way to achieve this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;The updated policy ensures there are entry-level competitive opportunities for transgender people to participate in the majority of our disciplines within their gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">&#8220;In order to progress further, however, the Female\/Open categories are utilised as a means to protect fair competition within the sporting pathway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">&#8220;Those that participate in aquatics recreationally should be able to do so, in a fully inclusive environment, free from discrimination.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".29h3n116lhy.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Scottish Swimming acknowledged Swim England&#8217;s new policy and said a working group had been created to draft a competition policy and guidance document over the coming months.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/swimming\/65166667?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=KARANGA\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In June 2022, Fina members voted to stop transgender athletes from competing in women&#8217;s elite races Swim England has said it will stop transgender women from competing in its licensed female competitions, instead introducing a separate open category.
