rugby union players in England will be split into four separate age bands at youth level.  <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">Many have welcomed the change hoping it will retain girls who were previously &#8220;daunted&#8221; playing U18s from age 15. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">However, some clubs have told BBC Sport that the increase from three to four bands puts &#8220;enormous pressure&#8221; on them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Lou Latter, women and girls representative on the Rugby Football Union council, said: &#8220;This is a really, really positive thing for girls&#8217; rugby. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">&#8220;We know that people aren&#8217;t comfortable with change, for me this is just a good sign of where the sport is going.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-6\">What are the changes?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">The Rugby Football Union has introduced the change as it targets 100,000 female players by 2027, up from 40,000 in 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">The previous age bands for girls were Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 18s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">For the new season girls will play as Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16s and Under 18s. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-10\">What has been the reaction?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Many have welcomed the new age bands after concerns that the old Under 18s group was too wide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Angie Hurren, Exeter Saracens girls&#8217; team manager, told BBC Sport the old jump from U15s to U18s &#8220;often resulted in girls leaving&#8221; and they are hopeful that the new bands will be &#8220;less daunting&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">Exeter Saracens U16s head coach Steve Sycamore added: &#8220;I&#8217;ve already had girls tell me that they plan to stay because they&#8217;re not going up to the U18s yet.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">With 100 affiliated girls, Exeter Saracens have one the biggest girls&#8217; sections in Devon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Their junior chairman Martyn Goldsborough says the club&#8217;s investment in their girls&#8217; section is reaping rewards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;It has been excellent to see the growth of the girls&#8217; game over the past few years and I hope that this growth continues throughout the upcoming seasons and into the future as this upsurge in girls&#8217; grassroots rugby can only benefit our senior, county and international teams in the long term,&#8221; he said.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Meanwhile, Leicester Forest Rugby Club was England centre Emily Scarratt&#8217;s first club and their Under 18s girls coach Ramela Mills said the changes &#8220;puts enormous pressure on recruitment for clubs, and their volunteers&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;Junior sections of rugby clubs rely heavily on parents stepping in to assist with running teams.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">Leicester Forest&#8217;s concerns surround &#8220;facilities and equipment becoming stretched&#8221; along with having &#8220;sufficient referees&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">Mills added that the pandemic &#8220;has seen clubs having to build their numbers again so maybe this has come too soon, another season may have helped clubs.&#8221;  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">The review into the age bands started in 2018 and the RFU told clubs in November 2021 the changes would start this season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">Mills is happy with the principle of closing the gap at the top age band to avoid the situation where girls feel &#8220;intimidated by a large gap&#8221;.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Latter explained that the old U15-U18s bands were deemed &#8220;a big jump for girls&#8221; and &#8220;we were just asking too much of players.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;The main thing is they are enjoying playing their rugby&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">She went on to add that the consultation did look at banding girls around height and weight but there needed to be a bigger &#8220;focus on the mental maturation&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".g1905mkvya.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;You could have a 13-year-old that could be competing physically with 17-year-olds but mentally she&#8217;s not mature enough to be playing in that size and age group.&#8221;
