People living near the shooting have described the moment it happened and the aftermath

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was shot dead in south Wales.

South Wales Police said officers were called to a report of a shooting on Green Park in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf, at about 18:10 GMT on Sunday.

The force confirmed a 40-year-old woman was found with serious injuries and died at the scene.

A 42-year-old man from Talbot Green has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

A number of crime scenes have been set up in the area as inquiries continue and road closures remain in place as officers gather evidence.

Det Ch Insp James Morris said: “I understand the concern this will cause the local community, and I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night.”

Residents in the town said there had been a significant response from the emergency services, with police vehicles heading to the area at speed with their blue lights on.

A police helicopter arrived over Talbot Green – a town 10 miles north-west of Cardiff – at 18:30 on Sunday and circled the area before later returning to its base in St Athan.

Residents have expressed their shock at the incident.

Calum Williams, who lives just a few houses from the incident, said he heard the gunshot.

“It’s terrible. I live just two doors down from where it happened. I was making a bottle for the baby and I heard a gunshot.

“It’s pretty frightening, especially with the baby.”

Carloyn Pugh, who lives nearby, said she heard the police helicopter hovering last night.

“It was scary. Within seconds, they [police] were everywhere,” she said.

“You didn’t know what was happening but you knew there was something bad.

“I’ve been here about 28 years and it was never like this.”

Local resident Anthony Dando, 59, was shocked by the incident.

“We’ve had trouble around here before but never with a gun. It’s frightening that sort of thing happens so close to your front door,” he said.

“It’s shocking to hear what happened to the girl. It’s so sad for her family and our thoughts are with them.”

Local councillor Sarah Jane Davies said recent events in the area had caused “concern and alarm” in the community.

Three police officers can be seen standing on the street, with two police vans behind them. It is dark, and one van has its brake lights on. Two police officers are wearing a black uniform with black caps on. A third is slightly in the background facing away, wearing a yellow fluorescent vest.

A significant police presence is here in Green Park, more than 12 hours since police received the initial call reporting a shooting in the area.

A number of police vehicles and officers are here and a road leading to a number of flats is still closed.

As local people make their way to work, the police investigation into what exactly happened here last night continues.
