Wales snow and ice weather warnings prompt school closures

Snow and ice weather warnings have prompted the closure of more than 30 schools across Wales on Monday.

As of Sunday evening, there were closures in multiple counties on what was meant to be the first day back after the two-week Christmas break after cold weather created hazardous conditions.

Schools have been shut in Gwynedd, Anglesey, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend county.

On Sunday, North Wales Police advised against travel in some places due to conditions affecting the A55 in Gwynedd and Anglesey and a bus operator also suspended some services.

The Met Office has a yellow warning in place for most of Wales until 12:00 GMT on Monday with up to 3cm (1.2in) of snow likely for some and up to 8cm (3.1in) on high ground.

Gwynfor Coaches, which runs buses in Anglesey, Caernarfon, Llanberis and Snowdonia, said it had suspended some services due to rural roads being “completely unsafe, and drivers unable to come in to work”.

In a Facebook post, North Wales Police said there were “issues in relation to the current weather conditions” affecting the A55 west of Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, to Anglesey, as well as the Felinheli bypass.

“Please avoid travelling unless absolutely essential,” it added.

Traffic Wales has reported several roads across the country affected by the weather conditions.

Newport County said its Sunday League Two fixture against Tranmere Rovers at Rodney Parade has been postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

Earlier, the Met Office had warned some to expect up to 10cm (4in) of snow by late Sunday morning in places likes Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Pembrokeshire and Powys.

A separate warning for snow and ice between Sunday and Monday afternoon covers most of Wales apart from Anglesey.

Ch Insp Emma Parry from North Wales Police said: “We’d ask everyone to please consider the weather conditions before venturing out, and stay away from mountainous or higher areas particularly affected.

“If you are travelling, please check your routes and the weather along the way and at your end destination.

“Please be reassured that we are working with our partners and are here to support our communities.”
