Briton Nina Hughes called for “fair judging” in Australia while fellow challenger Tiara Brown labelled world champion Skye Nicolson “Sonic the Hedgehog” at a fiery news conference on Wednesday.

Sydney hosts two intriguing female world title fights on Saturday with Nicolson defending her WBC featherweight title against Brown and Cherneka Johnson defending her WBA bantamweight belt against Hughes.

Hughes, 42, aims to reclaim the title she lost in controversial fashion 10 months ago when a scorecards mix-up meant the Englishwoman was announced the winner before it was corrected and Johnson was confirmed as the victor.

“All I ask for is fair judging this time. I believe I won the last fight. I am going to dominate this fight,” Hughes said.

“I’ve got to dominate, I’ve got to set a fast pace. I want to be treated fairly.

“I came over here last time as the champion and I wasn’t given neutral judges. We had an English judge over here but I wasn’t allowed to have him – so what’s all that about?”

Hughes was first to speak at the news conference, even suggesting many Australians she had met were “embarrassed” by what happened.

But Australian Johnson, also a world champion at super-bantamweight, was collected in her response.

“The belt’s in front of me,” she said.

“We full-heartedly believe we won that fight and I am going to win this one.”

The event at Qudos Bank Arena will be headlined by former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr as he takes on domestic rival Jake Wyllie.
