Another five wickets for fast bowler Olly Stone, giving him 50 in a first-class season for the first time, provided at least some celebration for Nottinghamshire after retaining their County Championship became mathematically impossible thanks to Warwickshire’s points haul against Leicestershire at Edgbaston.
The 2025 champions will fancy their chances of ending the season with a victory, leading Yorkshire by 127 with seven second innings wickets in hand, but after Warwickshire collected three batting bonus points to Nottinghamshire’s one, a gap that stood at 15 points at the start of the final round can no longer be closed.
On a pitch continuing to offer plenty to the bowlers, with 14 wickets falling on the day, England fast bowler Stone took 5-51 as Yorkshire were dismissed for 179 in their first innings in reply to the home side’s 251, all-rounder George Hill top-scoring with 58.
After bad light forced an early close, Nottinghamshire will begin day three on 55-3.
Stone’s haul was his fifth of five wickets or more this season, another career-best. But he will not add to his tally, 34 of which have come in the last six matches. Having dismissed Ben Cliff as his fifth victim here, he walked off the field after the completion of his over. He did not look in obvious discomfort, but an announcement soon followed that he had been replaced by an injury substitute in Tom Giles.
Earlier, Nottinghamshire’s first innings had ended just 22 balls into the morning session as Stone was last man out, the seventh in the innings to be caught either by wicketkeeper or slips.
Yorkshire, facing the challenge of heavy cloud cover in addition to a lively surface, encountered setback after setback in their attempt to construct a meaningful reply. Stone’s opening spell accounted for openers Will Luxton and Adam Lyth, both caught behind. When Brett Hutton had Sam Whiteman caught at second slip, Yorkshire were 33-3.
Returning after lunch for a second spell as testing as the first, Stone removed James Wharton via another catch at second slip, before uprooting Jonny Bairstow’s middle stump.
The one batter who might feel hard done-by was Matt Revis, given out when he looked to have survived Haseeb Hameed’s direct hit from wide long-off. No doubts, though, as Dom Bess and Ben Coad were added to the slip cordon’s count, at which point Yorkshire had lost five wickets for 34 runs, leaving them eight down and still 127 behind.
Thanks to Hill, Yorkshire’s leading wicket-taker and run-scorer this season, the final deficit was 55 runs fewer. The 25-year-old frustrated Nottinghamshire with his sixth half-century of the season, made off just 46 balls with six fours and an audacious scoop for six – off Stone of all people – as he and Cliff added 47 for the ninth wicket.
After Cliff had edged to first slip to become Stone’s fifth victim in the last six matches, Hill was last man out, stumped giving Liam Patterson-White the charge. His aggregate for the season is 744, a new personal best.
By the time they began batting again, Nottinghamshire were aware that Warwickshire’s bonus points tally against Leicestershire had put the title out of their reach.
With the new ball again a potent weapon in the hands of the Yorkshire seam attack, they lost openers Hameed and Ben Slater for nine runs in the first four overs, Coad and White finding edges. When Joe Clarke, dropped at leg slip off Coad on one, became a third victim for Bairstow and Hill’s 48th scalp of the season, Nottinghamshire were 24-3, but Jack Haynes and Ben Martindale guided them to the close with no further losses.
