Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has received a four-match European ban – with two of those games suspended – and been fined 50,000 euros (£43,000) for his part in a brawl following their Champions League play-off win at Lyon.

Mason Greenwood, the Turkish side’s English striker, has been given a one-match suspended ban which, like part of Guendouzi’s, “is subject to a probationary period of one year” and has been fined 30,000 euros (£26,000).

Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira has been handed a five-match ban, with two of those matches suspended, for what Uefa said, external was “serious assault” following Fenerbahce’s win, which sent them through to the league stage with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Guendouzi was punished for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Greenwood, who moved to Fenerbahce from Lyon’s fierce rivals Marseille in the summer, was penalised for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Both clubs were also fined 50,000 euros for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”.

Fenerbahce responded to the outcome, saying in a statement: “Our club is evaluating the decisions and reasoning behind them issued by Uefa through our legal departments, and will pursue the necessary arbitration and appeal processes to the Uefa appeals committee against the penalties imposed.”
