Newcastle United have made Italy international Giorgio Scalvini their top defensive transfer target with the Magpies hoping they can sign the 21-year-old Atalanta centre-back for about £30m. (Times – subscription required), external

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has set a deadline of less than two weeks for the club to agree a deal for Sporting’s Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres, 27, with RB Leipzig’s 22-year-old Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa and England’s Ollie Watkins, 29, alternative options.
