Kansas City Chiefs say they are “saddened by the senseless act of violence” after a shooting at the end of their Super Bowl victory parade.

One person died and 21 others were wounded in the incident on Wednesday evening.

Thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate the Chiefs’ second successive Super Bowl title.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City,” the Chiefs said.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally.

“At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.

“We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”

Police said they have arrested three suspects in connection to the shooting.

Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying “Praying for Kansas City” while his team-mate Travis Kelce said that he was “heartbroken”.

“My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC [Kansas City], you mean the world to me,” said Kelce.

Fellow Chiefs player Charles Omenihu called for stricter gun laws in the US.

“Prayers for those affected at today’s parade. A time of celebration ends in tragedy,” he wrote on X.

“When are we going to fix these gun laws? How many more people have to die to say enough is enough?”

The NFL described the shooting as “senseless”, and said it was “deeply saddened” by the events.
